Joel was rambling himself hoarse while Jonathan’s expression remained as blank as ever. Nothing was lonelier than gossiping alone, so Joel picked up his tea to moisten his throat.

Just as he was grumbling internally, a clear and lovely voice–one that also sounded oddly. familiar—spoke up beside him.
“Would you like some peanuts?”

Wait. The moment he recognized her voice as the same one from behind the screen earlier, the coffee he’d just sipped went straight down the wrong pipe.
He doubled over, choking and coughing.
He had assumed the women had left since it had gone quiet on the other side.
Still coughing awkwardly, he glanced at Jonathan–who had remained completely silent the entire time–and glared at him with wordless accusation.

“Uh… Mrs. Shaw, right?” Joel apologized with a sheepish smile. “Sorry about earlier. Talking behind someone’s back was definitely out of line. But, I mean, we were here first. He was a seasoned businessman–no stranger to awkward situations. After his coughing fit passed, he stood up like nothing had happened and extended a hand to Anneliese.

The message was clear: he had no part in Joel’s gossip and wasn’t about to get dragged into it.
Anneliese had been focused entirely on Joel–his mouth was a real threat, after all. But at the sound of that familiar voice, she instinctively turned to Jonathan.
And the moment she got a good look at his face–that cold, refined handsomeness–and met his profound eyes, her ankle buckled.
She let out a small cry as she stumbled forward toward the table.
Eyes squeezed shut, she cursed Jessica for insisting on stopping by the mall to get her a pair of four–inch stilettos–just to help her look more imposing in front of Coral.
Now she was about to make a total fool of herself. And she only wished she wouldn’t crash into the kettle and get her face badly scalded.
Yet, the embarrassing scene of shattered cups she’d expected never happened. Instead, a solid arm swept in like steel rebar, blocking her from falling across the table. Anneliese instinctively clung to it like a lifeline, wrapping her arms around it tightly.
When she finally steadied herself and opened her eyes, she let out a breath–only to be hit by a faintly unfamiliar scent. It was laced with the bitter fragrance of coffee, mingled with cool notes of wood and ambergris that lingered in her nose.
She blinked and only then realized she had both arms tightly wrapped around the man’s forearm, like she was hanging off of him.
She was gripping him so hard that… her chest hurt.
It was bruised from the impact and from being pressed too hard. The man had politely clenched his hand into a fist, but the wristwatch and knuckles were unyieldingly firm, digging right into her.
“You going to let go?” A cool voice rang out above her.
Snapping out of it, Anneliese recoiled like she’d been burned and quickly stepped back.
Jonathan withdrew his arm, but the moment she did, Anneliese nearly collapsed again–this time from sheer horror.
There, on his spotless white dress shirt, was a clear smudge of red–her lipstick.

The same lipstick she’d used to press her fingerprint carlier had still clung to her thumb and now left a glaring mark on his sleeve.
This was only their second meeting, and she’d already ruined two of his shirts.

Her face burned with embarrassment. Right now, she wanted nothing more than to launch this man–this walking aura of power–straight into outer space.

“Are you alright, Mrs. Shaw?” Joel turned to ask with concern.

Avoiding Jonathan’s gaze–which felt almost physical in its weight–she grabbed an upside- down cup, filled it, and raised it toward Joel with a composed smile.
“Mr. Callahan, I hope you’ll keep what just happened to yourself. I’ll toast to that with coffee in place of wine.”
Without waiting for a reply, she drained the cup, then dipped her head slightly in Jonathan’s direction. “Sorry about carlier. And… thank you.”
With that, she turned and made to leave, but Joel stepped in front of her.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Shaw, I won’t say a word. And since we’ve officially met now, how about adding me on WhatsApp?”
He needed to stay in the loop for the next episode of this drama, after all.
Anneliese really didn’t want to, but seeing that Joel had already pulled up his QR code, she couldn’t bring herself to refuse, especially since she was still counting on him to keep quiet.
She scanned it quickly and made her escape.
After she left, Joel finally processed what had just happened. He turned to Jonathan.

Jonathan took a sip of coffee and replied calmly, “No.”

“No? But why did it feel like the whole vibe just now was super weird? You think she got scared off by your frosty stare? But she didn’t exactly seem like the timid type.”
Jonathan couldn’t be bothered to respond. His eyes dropped to his right sleeve. The crisp white fabric had wrinkled a bit, and for some reason, that spot still held the lingering sensation of something soft and warm. It left him oddly unsettled.
He stood up and reached for his blazer. “Let’s go. Don’t forget your one–point cut.”
Joel clicked his tongue. “As if I could. I’ll get the contract drawn up when we get back. But hey -why’d she only ask me to keep quiet? You heard everything, too.”
He followed after him.
“Pretty obvious. Your mouth’s the one that runs.”
Joel fell silent, at a loss for words. And I just had to ask!
But just as they reached the front, the manager greeted them. “Mr. Fullbuster, Mr. Callahan, a young lady just now insisted on covering your table. I told her we could just put it on your tab, but she said Mr. Fullbuster would understand, so I went ahead and added it to her bill.”
Hearing that, Joel quirked a brow and glanced at Jonathan with a smirk.
“Well, that’s a first–going out with you and having a woman pick up the tab. You don’t know her, huh? Funny, she didn’t mention me at all.”
Something was definitely off. Joel could feel it in his bones.
