“Yeah, I switched. I’m in my first year of grad school under Professor Baltimore. Did you come back to campus too?”
“I did. I’m planning on grad school too, but right now I’m helping Professor Clocke organize the archives. You’re already in grad school? Congrats. I’m not your senior anymore, then. Who knows, maybe you’ll be mine.”
Anneliese laughed. She still remembered Jackson. Back when he was fighting through his transfer, he had come to her for advice more than once.
Jackson’s eyes landed on her bare fingers, and his smile grew.
“Glad I called you Anneliese, then. Let me help you carry this.”
“Thanks. Let’s reintroduce ourselves then. I’m Anneliese.”
They walked upstairs together, talking.
Not far away, Lenora stood hidden at the corner. Jealousy burned in her eyes as she glared at them.
Anneliese, you b*tch, she thought.
Anneliese spent the morning buried in the archives, so focused she nearly forgot the time.
By noon she hurried out of campus toward the bus stop when a car pulled up beside her.
A fat man with a round face and big ears stepped out of the back seat and grabbed her.
“Well, if it isn’t Mrs. Shaw. Where are you headed? Let me give you a ride.”

Anneliese instantly recognized him. It was Mr. Chokehand, an old business partner from Clauderias Tech.
Half a year ago, during a pitch meeting, he had almost taken advantage of her.
That was the day Zacharias stormed in, beat him bloody, and dragged her out. After that, Zacharias used it to force her into quitting her job and staying home to prepare for pregnancy.
“Let go! Or else Zacharias will show up and crack your head again!”
Her stomach twisted as she shook him off, her cold.

But Chokehand didn’t let go. His greasy stare lingered over her body.
“Don’t fake it. You think I don’t know you’re divorcing him? He already has someone else. Just be my girl.
“I can give you everything he did, maybe more. Better than wasting your time chasing after some college boy.”
His thick, sweaty hand reached for hers.
Anneliese fought back. She screamed, her voice cutting through the street, drawing the of passersby. But Chen Jie, heavy and powerful, glared at them like a wolf daring anyone to step in.

The crowd backed away. No one moved to help. Jacques Chokehand dragged her toward the curb.
Her chest tightened with panic.
Suddenly, a car swerved hard and smashed into the parked car beside them, the sound of metal crunching loud in her ears.
Jacques cursed and whipped his head around.
Anneliese seized her chance. She kicked him straight between the legs.
He buckled, groaning in agony as he clutched himself, and she bolted.
By the time he straightened, she was gone. “You little b*tch! This isn’t over!”

Jacques sneered. “What? You chasing her, too? Too bad. Your little stunt didn’t even get you a look.”
Jameson smirked. “Better than a pig like you who thinks he can lay a finger on her.”
He threw the car in reverse, spun around, and sped off to chase her. He drove through two streets but never saw her again.
Anneliese finally reached Maple Bay, and then she remembered she needed to pick up Meatloaf. She called Jonathan.
Jonathan gave her access to the top floor. When she arrived, she saw only one apartment.
She rang the bell. The door opened almost at once.
A man stood there, looking like he had just stepped out of the shower. He wore a long black robe, the belt tied tight, the collar neat. Only a strip of shin and a lean ankle showed.
His damp hair stuck to his forehead, a few strands falling loose. His skin smelled fresh and clean, with a sharp edge of danger that made Anneliese freeze.
Her breath caught. “Where’s Meatloaf?”
He stepped aside.
“Come in.”
Anneliese stayed rooted. “I won’t go in. Just send Meatloaf out.”
She called into the apartment, but Meatloaf never answered.
Jonathan arched a brow. “I won’t eat you, you know.”
