A sudden image flashed through Anneliese’s mind–Jonathan pinning her down on the couch, slowly leaning closer.
She could almost smell the clean, woodsy scent on him.
In his uniform, he seemed as distant and untouchable as a snowcapped peak. But if he were kneeling in front of her like this…
“You’re blushing!”
Jessica gave her a push, snapping Anneliese back to her senses.
She shook her head, but the heat in her face only grew stronger.
Why was she thinking of him now? Was she out of her mind, letting herself get distracted like this?
Men in uniform like him were nothing but trouble. She needed to wake up.
Blaming the atmosphere, Anneliese stood up. “I’m going to the restroom. You guys keep playing.”
“Want me to go with you?”
Jessica looked worried, but Anneliese shook her head. She had just seen Jessica sitting on the floor arm wrestling like a boxer. Better to let her keep having fun.
At Maple Bay, Jonathan stepped out of the shower, towel–drying his hair. His phone buzzed on the cabinet.
He answered while facing the floor–to–ceiling window.
Joel’s voice came through. “Zane’s back. Let’s get together tonight.
“Not going”

Before Joel finished complaining, the call ended.
At Velour, Anneliese took a moment in the restroom to breathe, then bumped into a man in the hallway.
It was Jacques.
Her face changed, and she turned to run.

Jacques Junged, grabbing her and dragging her toward a private room.
She struggled and tried to shout, but he covered her mouth. His grip was strong and his expression vicious–this time, he wasn’t letting her go.

Dragged along, Anneliese froze as his words sank in, a chill spreading through her.
She clutched the doorframe with all her strength, her eyes burning with anger.

Jacques frowned and reached to pry her fingers off.

A kick sent him flying into the wall before he collapsed to the floor.

Anneliese was pulled by the arm, and she instinctively followed.
After two turns, she stopped, bracing on her knees to catch her breath. Only then did she see who had saved her.
“Jameson? Thank you.”
Jameson leaned on the wall with one hand, catching his breath, and smiled.
“That’s the third time I’ve bailed you out. Don’t think you can just thank me and be done.”
“Third time?”
Jameson clicked his tongue. “I was the one who rammed Jacques‘ car before, too.”
Anneliese looked surprised. It all seemed like too much of a coincidence.
But for now, he really had helped her. She smiled sincerely.
“So how do you want me to thank you, Mr. Tate?”
“Nothing big. Just come sit in my booth for a while and have a couple of drinks.”
