Her roommate chimed in with a grin, “You know Coral’s one of the campus beauties, right? All the guys line up for her. Mr. Shaw, don’t get too full of yourself.”
Coral clung to Zacharias‘ arm, smiling sweetly. “He’s not that bad. Besides, he really does have an important meeting. We’ll plan another day, and he’ll treat everyone to dinner. Isn’t that right, Zacharias?”
Zacharias gave
the slightest nod. His face betrayed how little patience he had left.
“You all heard him. Let us through now,” Coral insisted.
Someone quipped, “Through? Sure. Only after a kiss.”
“Kiss! Kiss!” her roommates egged her on.
Coral’s cheeks flushed. She tiptoed toward him shyly.
Zacharias leaned down with a stiff look, playing along for show. Public affection wasn’t his thing. Right before her lips met his, he turned his head, letting her kiss land awkwardly on his cheek.
The moment he turned, his eyes collided with a pair he recognized instantly.
Anneliese.
His chest tightened, and his handsome mask cracked as his eyes widened. For a split second, he thought he was imagining her.
Reality hit. She was standing right there.
He shoved Coral aside without thinking and strode toward Anneliese.
“Ah!” Coral tumbled back onto the floor with a small scream, staring up at him in shock. Her eyes darted to Anneliese, and her face turned ghostly pale.
“Honey… w–what are you doing here?” Zacharias‘ voice shook as he reached for her.
Anneliese stepped back sharply, her expression frosty, her eyes filled with disgust. “Keep those filthy hands off me.”

Anneliese almost laughed at how fast he managed to spin that lie. She didn’t cut him off. She wanted to see how far he’d go with the performance.
“Oh, really? You expect me to buy that? Take a good look at yourself first. Maybe start with that ridiculous lipstick stain on your cheek before you keep acting.”
His jaw tightened. He rubbed his face, only to see the smear of lipstick on his fingers. His confidence faltered instantly.

That tone used to work on her. Even at her worst temper, she’d eventually cool down.

Her fury, bottled up for weeks, finally erupted. Her palm flew across his face.

The slap echoed in the air. Heads turned. Gasps spread through the crowd.
Zacharias stood frozen, stunned, the red mark on his cheek burning. “Anne… how could you hit me?”
Anneliese flexed her tingling wrist, eyes mocking. “Wasn’t clear enough? I can do it again if you’d like.”
She raised her hand once more. This time, he caught her wrist, his face darkening like storm clouds. He had finally pieced it together–she already knew,
His voice was sharp. “So, you’ve known this whole time? Were you spying on me?”
The accusation was so ridiculous that it almost made Anneliese laugh. She was about to fire back when Coral scrambled forward, voice trembling. “Ms. Claude, please don’t be mad at Zacharias. We were only messing around–it was just a game. If you need to take it out on someone, hit me instead, I-”
Smack!
Her words were cut short by Anneliese’s hand striking her cheek. Coral stumbled back, clutching her face, eyes welling with tears.
