When she got back to Maple Bay, Anneliese didn’t even stop by her place to check on Meatloaf. She went straight upstairs and pressed the doorbell. But no one answered, no matter how long she waited.
Her eyes lit up with a faint spark of hope. Maybe Jonathan isn’t home at all. Maybe when he hung up on me earlier, he’d just been busy outside and hadn’t even noticed I’d shirked my little duty. Yes, yes, that had to be it–no need to panic.
With that thought, she relaxed a little, pulled out her phone, and sent him a WhatsApp message. ‘Mr. Fullbuster, since you’re not home and dinner time has already passed, I suppose I don’t need to cook tonight? I’ll come again tomorrow.‘
She let out a quiet sigh of relief, turned around—

A crisp sound of the door unlocking came from behind her. Anneliese froze. No way…
But the faint hope inside her immediately withered when Jonathan’s deep voice followed, echoing in the empty hallway. “Going somewhere?”
She didn’t dare turn around, instinctively dropping her gaze to her phone. Maybe if I delete that message now, I can still save myself?
“I’ve been home this whole time.”

Like a stiff robot, Anneliese slowly turned around, haltingly raising her hand in a tiny wave.
“Hi”
Jonathan still had his phone in his hand, the lit–up screen showing her WhatsApp message as if mocking her for her ridiculous little trick.
Her embarrassment was enough to make her want to dig a hole in the floor. Meeting his dark gaze, she pressed her palms together and quickly apologized. “I’m sorry, I really didn’t mean to forget you…”
“You didn’t mean to? You’re saying you wanted to do it on purpose?”
Anneliese fell guiltily silent.

Bracing herself, she stepped in after him, slipped on disposable slippers, and headed toward the kitchen while rolling up her sleeves. “Mr. Fullbuster, please wait a moment. I’ll whip up dinner for you right away.”
She hadn’t taken more than two steps when Jonathan’s low voice cut her off. “Don’t bother. Cooking for me was never your responsibility. It was unfair of me to push it onto you. I’ll have Zion arrange for another housekeeper tomorrow. You don’t need to trouble yourself anymore.”
His words were polite, but the cool distance in his tone stung far more than if he had scolded her outright. Anneliese froze in place, then slowly turned to look at him.
He was sitting on the couch with a tablet in hand, his gaze nowhere near her. A natural chill surrounded him, proud and untouchable.
Knowing full well she was in the wrong, Anneliese bit her lip and forced herself forward to explain. “Mr. Fullbuster, I’m sorry. I agreed to help you with meals. That makes it my responsibility.
“Even if I had something else to do, I should’ve told you ahead of time. I shouldn’t have buried myself in research and sketches until I lost track of time, and then tried to cover it up. I truly apologize.”
Shame burned through her, and she even started to bend, ready to bow in apology.
But Jonathan suddenly lifted his eyes to hers. “Researching papers and sketching designs–was that why you lost track of time?”
Not because you saw the husband you used to love dearly, lost your head, and tried to rekindle old feelings?
Startled by the look in his eyes, Anneliese rushed to clarify. “Really, I was working on design sketches. I even forgot to eat. The moment I realized the time, I rushed straight back. I swear it wasn’t on purpose.”
As if to prove her words, her stomach growled loudly.
Normally, she would’ve died of embarrassment at such an unladylike sound. But right now, she thought it couldn’t have come at a better time,
She even straightened her belly a little, pressing her hand over it, then looked up at him with pitiful eyes. “See? You heard that, right? My stomach isn’t lying.”

And then, from the entryway, came a thunderous voice. “Oh my god–Ms. Claude is pregnant?”

Pregnant? Who’s pregnant? Anneliese wondered without a second thought. Is there another Ms. Claude here?
She whipped her head around to see Zion standing there with two food containers in hand, staring at her in shock. His eyes were locked squarely on her stomach.
Only then did she realize what he’d misunderstood. She hurriedly shoved her hands behind her back, sucked her stomach in hard, and wished she could stick her butt out just to erase the image.
