Zina had been holding onto Kellan, chatting away for quite some time, when she suddenly fell silent, looking conflicted as she glanced over at Hayden.
“You’ve been here the whole time?” she asked.
“Yes, Miss Lambert,” Hayden replied. He was clenching his hand so hard it was almost bruised, barely managing to keep a polite smile on his face.
A flicker of embarrassment flashed in Zina’s eyes as she scratched her head, looking a bit at a loss for words. In the end, she just fell silent.
Instead, Kellan shot Hayden a look, and Hayden immediately got the message, taking the initiative to speak up. “I just remembered I have something to take care of, so I’ll leave you two alone for now.”
But as he was about to go, Zina suddenly seemed to think of something and quickly called out to stop him.
“Wait, um, if you don’t mind, could you come upstairs with me? There aren’t many people up there, so we can talk in detail,” Zina said.
Hayden instinctively glanced at Kellan and only nodded after making sure Kellan had no objections.
Hayden trailed right behind Kellan, who was following Zina, the three of them forming a neat little line as they headed upstairs.
Once they reached the second floor, Zina led the two men to a guest room.
The room was spotless, with just two laptops, a bed, and a few chairs—nothing else at all.
Even Kellan, who was used to minimalist spaces, was momentarily taken aback when he stepped inside. “Is this your room?” he asked.
“No, it’s just for work,” Zina said, dropping into a chair. She took a deep breath, then looked up at the two men in front of her.
“Check this out. If I remember right, the Carter family’s been running into some trouble in Springvale lately.
“If you help me sort this out, it’ll be good for you too. With a chance like this, Mr. Carter, I doubt you’d let it slip by, right?” she said.
On the laptop screen, every detail about Andy was on full display–nothing hidden at all.
For a split second, Kellan actually felt a flicker of emotion.
“Andy suddenly got in touch with Kevin about five years ago. The Sinclair family might not be a prestigious clan in Jorvellan, but they’ve barely managed to squeeze into the ranks of the upper class.
“That kind of status is just low–key enough not to attract attention–perfect cover for shady business,” Zina explained.
