Anneliese pressed her lips into a soft smile, and her thoughts wandered to the White family, to Zacharias.
Even though they were her closest relatives, the warmth and kindness they offered could not match the genuine care of a stranger she had just met–Penelope.
Jonathan watched her smile shift subtly, teasing and thoughtful. He wanted to ask her a question.
He wondered what kind of place he held in her heart.
But he knew it was too delicate to ask now.
Even if he tried, she would probably sidestep the answer.
And he did not want to upset her.
“What is it? Did I say something wrong?”
Anneliese felt a small flutter of unease under his steady, lingering gaze.
Jonathan relaxed his expression and offered a faint smile.
“I was thinking about what you said about your name earlier.”
“Huh?”
“You said your mother liked graceful stuff, so Anne makes sense, but you know, ‘Liese‘ can mean ‘God is my abundance“,”
Anneliese blinked. Her father had never told her that.
“Yeah, abundance. It’s not just one thing, you know. It’s supposed to be many. Perhaps your father wanted your life to be one filled with joy and everything you’d
ever need.”
She had never thought of it that way. Surprise softened into delight.

She felt her adoptive parents‘ care and love as if they were her biological parents.
Perhaps Jonathan’s words captured her father’s true intention.
Her lips curved gently. “Thank you. I love that explanation. Next time I see my parents, I will tell my dad.”
Jonathan watched her smile and nodded slightly.
She studied him with curiosity. “What about your name? Gift of God?”
“Probably. My grandfather named me. You know, air cargo guys don’t like bad weather, so God’s providence is important.”
Jonathan gave a small, self–deprecating smile.
Gift of God. He was far from that.

She noticed the irony in his smile and guessed he did not love the name either.
Still, she smiled gently.
“It’s great, you know. To be a gift of God. Great things in life.”
Jonathan looked at her. Her eyes curved with careful kindness, trying to

He was surprised at how easily she sensed his feelings. A strange, thrilling tension tightened his chest.
Her gentle insight made him want her even more.
