He held a delicate platinum bracelet set with over a dozen rubies. The gems caught the light, sparkling brilliantly as his pale, precise fingers tilted it slightly, almost beckoning her to reach for it.

Was he really going to put it on her himself?
Tonight, Anneliese had kept her look simple. Only pearl earrings dangled from her ears. Both wrists were bare.
No woman could resist a piece of jewelry this exquisite, placed right before her.
She lifted her hand instinctively, but then noticed her wrist was already red and swollen.
She tried the other hand, only to see similar marks there.
Her skin was thin and delicate. Earlier, Zacharias and Selina had gripped her too
hard.
“Maybe I should just forget it. I ran into a couple of crazies a while ago.”
Embarrassed, she tucked both hands into her shawl.
Jonathan didn’t comment. He nodded slightly and placed the ruby bracelet back in its box.
Then he leaned over and grabbed a first aid kit.
“Give me your hand.” He held out a bottle of anti–swelling spray.
He hadn’t offered the bracelet just for show. This was his way of helping her.
Her wrists still throbbed, so she handed her hand over without hesitation.

Jonathan held her forearm carefully and sprayed the cooling, soothing formula over the swollen areas.
A tingling chill spread across her skin, easing the pain instantly.
“Your other hand as well.”
Once one wrist was treated, he gestured for her to switch.
Anneliese offered the other hand. Jonathan sprayed it carefully too, then looked up and noticed her faint, amused smile.
“What are you smiling at?”
He capped the bottle.
Anneliese’s eyes curved in a small, wry smile. “Nothing, just thinking about the last time I got hurt and you rescued me.”
Jonathan’s expression darkened.
“So, take care of yourself. I have zero interest in rescuing injured kittens all the time.”
Anneliese thought silently that it was something out of her control.
She had been too young and too naive to see Zacharias‘ volatile side before she married him.
She flashed Jonathan a big, playful OK.
He handed her the capped spray.
“Use this if it still hurts. A few sprays tonight, and by morning it should be fine.”
She nodded and took it. Her lips moved as if to say thanks, but she realized she had already said it too many times.
Instead, she tilted her head.

“The ramen I made last time–you really liked it, didn’t you? It’s not hard to make. I can show you how tomorrow if you want.”
Jonathan sent a quick message on his phone and looked back at her with a smile. “Sure.”
Zacharias and Selina left the hotel. The man’s mind was heavy with thoughts.
He walked ahead with a cold expression, ignoring Selina, who was struggling in her high heels behind him.
She called twice, and he did not respond.
Just before they reached the lobby exit, a casually dressed middle–aged woman bumped into Zacharias.
“Mr. Shaw, what a coincidence.”
“Dr. Helpis? How much longer until my wife’s body is ready for conception?”
The woman was the gynecologist overseeing Anneliese’s health.
Her eyebrows rose in surprise. “Mr. Shaw, she has been ready for a while now. She hasn’t shown up at the hospital for two weeks at this point. She fully meets the criteria for conception.”
Zacharias‘ stunned expression mirrored hers.
“Really? Mrs. Shaw didn’t tell you this good news? She was so happy she had tears in her eyes and wanted to share it with you immediately.”
Immediately?
