Chapter 136
“So, have you thought it through? Isn’t Kellan exactly like I said? You treat him like family, but he might never see you that way,” the man said, his voice raspy and convincing, with a tone that made it hard to argue.
Kyle
He looked down at rom above, a sense of admiration flickering in his heart. Kyle was undoubtedly the
best candidate to deal with Kellan.
As he pondered, Kyle looked up, a lost look in his eyes, as if he had no idea what to say. He simply gazed silently at the man in front of him. “What do you want?” Kyle finally asked.
“I told
you. You can join us. You know as well as I do, when Kellan was overseas, he made a lot of enemies. He got our deputy leader killed, and all we want is revenge. The Carter family will still be yours,” the man replied.
Kyle lowered his head, saying nothing, but his trembling body and tightly clenched fists revealed the storm brewing inside him.
Maybe it’s time for me to find another way out, Kyle thought. ‘It’s all Kellan’s fault for refusing to help me. So I can’t be blamed for what happens next.
Kyle slowly stood up, his gaze fixed on the man in the black robe, who seemed so out of place. Finally, he extended his hand toward him.
The man seemed to have anticipated this moment and wasn’t overly excited. Instead, he slowly reached out and gripped Kyle’s hand tightly.
Meanwhile, back in the living room, Kellan frowned, a sudden sense of foreboding washing over him. He tensed up for a moment.
Zina turned to look at him, noticing how strange he was acting. “What’s wrong? You seem a little off,” she asked.
“Nothing,” Kellan replied, shaking his head. Kellan tried to shake off that uneasy feeling, let out a quiet sigh, and finally looked up at Zina, his gaze turning serious.
Richard shook his head and sighed in mock frustration. “Zina only pays attention to you. We don’t get that kind of treatment.”
Though Richard said it jokingly, when Zina met his gaze, she suddenly felt a pang in her chest. Perhaps, in Richard’s eyes, she had already become their daughter. A family by blood, a bond that nothing could ever change.
But even now, she couldn’t bring herself to admit how she felt about the Lambert family.
Perhaps it was because of what happened when she first came back, or maybe something deep inside her, but she just wanted to keep a clear line between herself and them.
So up to now, she’d never called Richard and Yvonne “Dad” or “Mom,” yet they had always treated her as their own, without any complaint.
