Chapter 141
Looking at the not–so–broad, even slender back, Kaia thought of Donald, who had stood in front of her in the same way some time ago.
This family were all good people.
Lilian’s words implied that Madeline was ill–mannered.
Lester and Judith’s faces changed color dramatically, shifting from livid to purple. “Lilian, isn’t that a bit much?”
Lilian said, “A bit much? Was it your daughter who crossed the line? Your daughter is always so arrogant and domineering, showing no respect for her elders and speaking to us without any manners.
“We let it go because she is younger and we didn’t want to argue with her. It’s my fiftieth birthday today, and in front of everyone, she spoke to me like that. Penny has never behaved so rudely in front of your family.”
Lester and the other were speechless because they were in the wrong today.
Judith forced a smile. “Yes, you’re right. Madeline was rude.”
Madeline widened her eyes. “Mom-”
“Alright, Madeline, stop it. You’re not a child, and you still don’t know any manners. Don’t forget, we’re here to celebrate your aunt’s birthday today. Didn’t you prepare a gift? Hurry up and give it to your aunt.”
Madeline held back her anger and took out the gift.
“Aunt Lilian, I saved up my pocket money for a long time to buy you this ginseng. Your health is not good, so please use it to nourish yourself.”
“Okay, thank you.” Lilian took it and handed it to Penny.
Penny opened it and muttered, “This ginseng is so small, and it doesn’t look wild. It’s definitely not worth anything. They all treat us like fools, giving this stuff to my mom. Aren’t they afraid it might kill her?”
Zina and said, “You and Mrs. Lambert seem a little distant.”
Zina’s body stiffened for a moment. She rubbed her forehead, only then realizing that her reaction earlier had been a bit too much.
She searched for an explanation, but when she turned to meet Kellan’s gaze, the words got stuck in her throat.
“It’s normal. Every wealthy family has its secrets. The Carter family is no different -there’s always trouble brewing,” he said, breaking the silence.
“Yeah,” Zina nodded, clearly not in the mood to keep talking.
Kellan didn’t push it and just focused on driving. Before long, they arrived at Kellan’s spacious apartment in the city center.
This was the heart of the business district, with a constant flow of people, bustling with activity. As the car stopped, Zina could feel the rush of other cars passing just inches away.
By the time she snapped back to reality, Kellan was already out of the car,
watching her closely. She hurriedly smoothed out her clothes and quickly got out to join him.
They went straight upstairs, and the elevator finally stopped on the thirteenth floor.
Zina suddenly asked, “With your status, you can get anything. So why did you choose to team up with me?” This was something Zina had never quite figured out, and she decided to finally bring it up today.
Kellan seemed taken aback by the question. He paused for a second before smiling and saying, “Teaming up with you just makes the most sense. After all, we’re both after pretty much the same people, aren’t we?
“You probably hate Kyle more than I imagined, and I happen to know a bit about the Sinclair family. I get where all that resentment comes from.”
Kellan’s voice trailed off, leaving his words hanging in the air, but it was enough to make Zina fall silent. She bit her lip, her eyes filled with unspoken emotions.
Chapter 141
Kaia took a look and immediately made a judgment.
She said, “Cultivated ginseng that is less than three years old is not strong enough to be fatal if consumed, but given godmother’s current health condition, drinking it would be of no benefit..”
Penny stared at Kaia with a puzzled expression. “How do you know how my mom’s health is right now?”
“When she pulled me over just now, I took her pulse,” Kaia explained.
Penny’s eyes widened. “You know medical skills?”
“Yes, I’ve learned some. After the party ends later, I want to give Auntie a good pulse diagnosis.”
Kaia had heard that Lilian was not in good health, so she brought a medical kit for treatment when she came.
“Are
your medical skills that good?” Penny didn’t dare to underestimate Kaia now.
After a moment of silence, Kaia leaned in close to Penny’s ear and said, “If I told you that I am Dr. Miracle who treated the mother of the SR Alliance boss, would you believe it?”
Penny nodded seriously. “I believe you. I also have a secret to tell you.”
“What is it?” Kaia asked.
“Actually, I am Dr. Bennett, known to everyone in Morganburg.”
Kaia was lost for words.
“Hahaha…” Penny looked at Kaia’s frozen face and couldn’t help but laugh out loud.
“How about it? My joke is funnier than yours, right?” Penny chuckled.
Kaia raised her hand to her forehead.
She decided that she wouldn’t reveal her identity in the future. Anyway, no one would believe her even if she did.
Just then, Kellan opened the door, and Zina walked in, letting the previous conversation drop completely.
Kellan followed her inside, just shaking his head slightly without saying another word.
The curtains were drawn and the lights were off, making the room look pretty dim.
Suddenly, a weary, aged voice drifted out from the darkness. “Who’s out there?”
“It’s me,” Kellan said unhurriedly, flipping on the lights. The room instantly brightened, and at that moment, Sean’s miserable face was revealed.
Sean’s eyes were fixed on them, and when he realized it was Kellan, he quickly forced a grin, showing off his yellow teeth.
Zina instinctively turned her head away, not wanting to look at him. But Sean spoke up again. “Didn’t expect to see you here too, Miss Lambert. It’s been a long time since I last saw you.”
“Yeah,” Zina nodded, her eyes wandering around the room. Her eyes landed on something that looked like a black duffel bag under the TV cabinet. Zina couldn’t help but stare at it for a moment.
“Miss Lambert, is there something you need from me? I’ve heard a lot about you lately, and I really respect you. If there’s anything I can do for you, just say the
word,” Sean said.
Despite his words, Sean kept glancing nervously at Zina, clearly uneasy about something.
Zina gave a slight smile and quietly replied, “Alright. If I ever need your help, you’ll hear from me in advance.”
Sean nodded, relieved that Zina seemed to have lost interest in the TV cabinet. He turned his eager gaze back to Kellan. “Mr. Carter, is there anything you need from me today?”
“That evidence you told me about before–the stuff on Andy’s murder. I thought I’d see if it might come in handy today,” Kellan said. His lips curled into a faint
After presenting her gift, Madeline targeted Kaia again.
She said, “Kaia, you’re my aunt’s goddaughter now. Today is her fiftieth birthday You didn’t come empty–handed, did you?”
Penny and Lilian stood up almost at the same time.
“Madeline, why are you always making trouble for Kaia? Has she offended you?” said Penny.
Lilian said, “Madeline, I like the gift you gave me, and I appreciate it very much. But one thing is another. Kaia is my family. Please don’t make things difficult for her. Otherwise, don’t blame me for being unkind.”
Madeline held her breath, trying to maintain a smile, her eyes passing through the backs of Penny and Lilian, and landing on Kaia.
Madeline said, “Kaia, I’m not deliberately targeting you, I just want to ask if you prepared a gift for your godmother? If you forgot to prepare, I can lend you a gift.”
Every word, both spoken and implied, was laced with sarcasm.
Without taking a look Madeline, Kaia said to Lilian, “Godmother, I have already prepared your gift long ago.”
Upon hearing this, Madeline fixed her gaze on Kaia, eager to see for herself what kind of gift Kaia had prepared. If it was something unpresentable, she was certain she would make a point of mocking her.
Kaia took out a wooden box and handed it to Lilian.
“Thank you, Kaia, you are really my good daughter.” Lilian hugged Kaia into her
arms.
“Auntie, why don’t you open it and see? We are all very curious?” Madeline
couldn’t wait to see Kaia make a fool of herself.
Lilian’s expression was extremely grim. Just as she was about to speak up in defense of Kaia, Kaia’s voice sounded first.
“Godmother, I chose this gift specifically for you. See if you like it,” said Kaia.
smirk, his cold, piercing eyes fixed on Sean.
Almost instantly, Sean’s legs went weak and started trembling–he couldn’t shake the feeling that Kellan was seeing right through him.
He couldn’t dare to say much and forced himself to answer, “It’s been a long time, so my memory’s a bit fuzzy. How about I take some time to remember where I put those things, and get back to you with a clear answer?”
Sean didn’t dare lift his head, feeling the weight of Kellan’s gaze pressing down on him. His fingers curled into fists, but they still trembled uncontrollably.
Kellan remained silent, making the tension in the room even thicker. The only sound was the chattering of Sean’s teeth, echoing in the stillness.
After what felt like ages, Kellan finally flexed his wrist and shot Sean a smile. “Well, all your stuff should be here, isn’t it? Want me to help you find it?” Kellan said casually, but his voice carried a clear warning.
“Well…” Lilian frowned.
Kaia said, “It’s okay, open it and take a look. I believe you’ll like anything I give you, expensive or cheap.” Kaia looked at Lilian with a smile.
Lilian said, “That’s right, as long as it’s from you, it’s a token of your affection. So let me see what gift our Kaia has specially picked out for me.”
While saying this, Lilian opened the wooden box, and was so shocked when she saw the huge ginseng inside that she almost dropped the box.
After the others noticed Lilian’s reaction, they all curiously gathered around, stunned.
Penny immediately recognized the origin of this ginseng.
“My god! Kaia, is this the ginseng from the auction a few days ago?” she exclaimed.
As soon as these words were spoken, everyone present was once again deeply shocked.
“Oh my god, I heard that ginseng was sold for 300 million dollars! And it was just given away like that?”
“Isn’t the most important thing the price? This is a century–old ginseng! It’s priceless. If it weren’t for the annual large–scale auction in Morganburg, it wouldn’t be easy to buy on a normal day.”
“Yes! It can save your life at a critical moment!”
Listening to the discussions, Madeline felt her face burning with pain as if she had been slapped.
She thought, ‘Kaia must have done it on purpose. Otherwise, why send ginseng, of all things, just like me!‘
At this moment, the ginseng she sent was left aside, forming a sharp contrast with the one Kaia sent.
“Well… This is too precious, Kaia, I can’t accept it.” Lilian never thought that Kaia would give a century–old ginseng worth 300 million dollars.
Kaia saw Lilian was about to hand the ginseng back to her, and pushed it back.
Kaia said, “Godmother, as I just said, I chose this for you. No matter its value, it represents my thoughtfulness. If you refuse it, it would be as if you were rejecting my intention.”
Hearing this, Lilian hesitated for a moment and turned to look at Donald.
“Honey, this…” she said.
Donald said, “Take it. This is the first time Kaia has given you a gift. If you refuse, it will break her heart.”
Since her husband had said so, Lilian had no choice but to accept it.
As the party ended and all the guests left, Kaia pulled Lilian toward the sofa.
