“M–Me? Are you serious?” Anneliese stammered out the question after a long, pregnant pause.
She couldn’t help but feel that Jonathan was using this as a confession. She didn’t know what to think. She didn’t even know if she could think. Her heart was pounding to the tempo of a hummingbird’s flight, and her mind refused to cooperate.
Yet, she also noticed that his eyes were far too calm. He didn’t have the look of a man baring his soul to another.
“Do I look like I’m joking?” Jonathan asked with an arched brow..
He looked dead serious.
However, she also knew that people tended to look super serious before breaking into laughter the very next second. It had to be a joke of some sort, right?
Jonathan felt somewhat resigned at the suspicious look on her face..
So, he scooped up some soup and held it out to Anneliese, silently signaling her to open her mouth.
The soup smelled delicious, and her stomach was definitely eager to get some of that in her body. However, Anneliese held herself back, hesitating.
She couldn’t help but wonder whether drinking the soup would also mean accepting the proposal.
“Just drink the soup. Getting food in your belly doesn’t make you my woman. Your hand is hurt. Plus, it’s not as if I haven’t fed you in the past.”
Anneliese felt her cheeks heat up in embarrassment. How could he just… I know I don’t exactly have a good poker face, but he didn’t have to expose me like that! Ugh, he’s so annoying.
She lowered her eyes and obediently parted her lips..
However, she couldn’t really enjoy the soup she was eating.
Jonathan shot her a discreet glance and saw past her badly worn composure. She’s still completely out of sorts, he sighed inwardly..
Just then, his ringtone broke the awkward atmosphere.

“I can feed myself. You should get that.”

Jonathan took a look at the screen, swiped to answer, put it on speaker, and set it aside.
He didn’t relinquish the bowl to her for even a second. Instead, he continued to feed her..
His mother’s voice came through, “Jonathan, I asked you to go to the banquet to support Selina. And what did you do? Selina got so upset that she fainted. She’s being hospitalized now!”
Selina fainted?
Anneliese scrunched her nose in skepticism. If she wasn’t mistaken, Selina was far from some fainting flower.
Still, it was likely that the White family would place the blame on Selina’s shoulders after tonight’s ordeal.
Now, the White family would do a complete 180 and end up pitying her because she fainted.
“Jonathan, Selina saved my life. You should pay her a visit.”
Jonathan held the spoon to Anneliese’s lips as he shot a dispassionate look at the phone.
“I’m busy. Also, I barely know her.”
“That’s exactly why you should spend more time together and get to know each other! Trust me, Selina is a sweet, lively girl. You two-”
“Bad signal. Bye.” Jonathan immediately ended the call right then and there..
Anneliese burst into a peal of giggles. Never once did she imagine that Jonathan would use such a lame excuse to get out of that talk with his mother.
It was endearing in a weird way.
“You did the smart thing by choosing not to visit her. I have a good hunch that Selina’s playing the victim card,” Anneliese said with a cheeky grin.
Jonathan quirked a brow and replied, “I did say that I trust your judgement, didn’t I? Anyway, as you can see, I’m at the age where my family would pull all the stops to see me get hitched.”
He curled his lips into a self–deprecating smile as the mirth on his face disappeared, replaced

“My grandpa likes India, my mom thinks Selina is the next best thing after grilled cheese, and you were there when my grandma rang me up. She would set me up with any girl she sets her sights on. My dad doesn’t really care, but I can only inherit some of his shares if I get married this year.”
Anneliese had no words for the utter ridiculousness he was facing. In fact, she couldn’t help but nurse a bit of headache just thinking about the things he had to suffer.
“I think India’s a good catch…” she suggested haltingly.
India was gorgeous with her long legs and thin waist. She was so cool and nice that Anneliese genuinely thought India and Jonathan would make a good couple..
Jonathan stared at Anneliese, trying to catch even a hint of dishonesty on her face. Unfortunately, there were none.
That realization made him bitter as he shoved that bowl into her hands and said coldly, “I only see India as a sister. It’s never gonna happen.”
Anneliese could tell that he was upset. So, she pursed her lips and muttered, “So you’re saying…”
Jonathan wouldn’t go his way just to spell it all out for her, just because. So, Anneliese could tell what he was implying, but she still thought it was utterly incredulous.
However, she could no longer play dumb any longer because Jonathan laid it all out the very next second, leaving her stunned.
He said, “Have you ever considered that we could just get our marriage registered after you get your divorce papers? We’ll be at the City Hall anyway.”
Anneliese could only gape at him, utterly speechless.
Anneliese showed up at the City Hall half an hour early the following day. She’d been counting the days since forever.
“Zacharias isn’t gonna bail, is he?”
Jessica was accompanying her, checking the time. It was almost 9 a.m. and Zacharias was nowhere to be seen. Naturally, she was getting anxious and angry.
“He’ll be here.”
