Jonathan’s eyes fastened on her, calm yet searching, her face bright with disbelief and restless curiosity. His thoughts drifted far behind them, to a picture that would not fade. He saw her as a little girl, so small, so fragile, sitting alone in the shadows of a corner, her arms wrapped tight around herself as tears streamed silently down her cheeks.
She had been eight or nine then, and he had seen her only three times.
And every single time, she had been crying.
Years later, when they crossed paths again, the life she carried had not been gentle. Her family had treated her cruelly, and her marriage had left her broken and betrayed.
Yet she never cried. She stood against it all with unyielding brightness, with a courage that refused to bend.
But for him, she would always remain that girl who once let her tears fall freely.
And deep inside, he wished for the day when she could stand before him again as that same girl, one who laughed without restraint, who shouted when she was angry, who wept when she hurt, and never once felt she had to hide it.
“You cried. You cried so hard I couldn’t even comfort you. Think harder.”
His voice lingered as his eyes stayed locked on hers, carrying meaning she could not grasp.

Anneliese’s lashes flickered as her mind spun, her memory empty of anything like that.
The more she tried, the clearer it became. It had to be the night when her memory had been
taken from her.
She could not recall it, but her imagination betrayed her. She pictured herself pressed against him, clinging desperately, kissing him again and again, dissolving into sobs when he resisted, and him gathering her in his arms, his voice soft and low as he calmed her broken cries.

A hot rush of color filled her cheeks, burning brighter with every passing second. Her gaze darted helplessly, refusing to meet his.
Jonathan caught the change at once, saw the way silence wrapped around her, saw the pink flush crawl across her cars and face. He knew exactly what she was imagining.
His lips curved faintly, and he offered no denial, no hint to ease her nerves.
Because she was not mistaken.
That night, she had cried against him for a long time.

Jonathan’s throat shifted as he watched the blush spread, soft and consuming, down to her neck.
The air thickened in the back seat, heavy and charged, as if something unseen had sealed them inside it together.
In the silence, he tugged lightly at his tie. Anneliese startled as her phone vibrated with another incoming alert, and she fumbled clumsily until the family group chat sprang open before her eyes.
The screen burst with comments. Each new message stacked on top of the last, pouring in so quickly that the chat seemed to roar. Jonathan’s post had landed like a stone dropped in deep water, sending shockwaves that drew every hidden voice to the surface.
Anneliese froze when her eyes caught the number. There were over three hundred members in the group.
She ignored the storm of replies, scrolling upward with urgency until she found the source.
It was Jonathan’s photo, a picture of him holding two marriage licenses. Only the papers were shown. There were no names or faces.
Relief loosened her chest, but the replies kept churning, wild and relentless,
Her eyes skimmed them, and a small laugh slipped out.
“Everyone thinks someone hacked your account. But honestly, is your family really this huge?”
Everywhere she looked, the flood of messages circled around the same questions. Who was the bride? What was her name? What should she be called?

One reply was so ridiculous that it made her pause. Someone had called Jonathan ‘Great Uncle‘ and asked who their ‘Great Aunt‘ was, demanding to know when they could meet her in
person.
“This is the main Fullbuster Family group,” Jonathan said simply. “Every branch is inside. I don’t even know most of them, so you don’t need to pay them any attention.”
Because he was already set to inherit the position of head of the family, his name had been added years ago, though he had never once spoken in the chat.
Now that he was married, it was only right that they should know. And this was the quickest way to tell them all at once.
The storm of messages did not surprise him. He had even expected the disbelief, the claims that his account had been stolen.
“Your parents and grandmother just messaged you on WhatsApp,” Anneliese murmured as more alerts blinked across the screen.
Her amusement gave way to nerves, and she quickly pushed the phone back into his hand.
The news must have already reached his closest family.
Jonathan accepted it without so much as a glance.
Instead, he Venmoed them some money, his quiet way of answering their accusations.
Then he muted the phone and tucked it away.
By then, the car had rolled to a stop at the base of Maple Bay.
Anneliese’s voice lowered as she turned to him. “I’m going now. You don’t have to send me off.”
Jonathan gave a small nod. “This afternoon, I’ll have Joel come by to handle Ms. Sweeting’s
situation.”
“What?”
Anneliese blinked, startled by how far ahead he had already planned.
When the meaning settled in, she nodded quickly. “Alright. Then make sure you take care of yourself while you’re away.”
