Anneliese curled her lips into a sharp, icy smile. Her eyes scanned the group of women, bright and unwavering.
“To all of you so eager to support the Shaw family, I hope your daily lives are filled with in- laws who belittle and mistreat you. I hope you sweat and struggle alongside your husbands to build everything from nothing, remain loyal even when your marriage collapses, uncover hidden secrets and illegitimate children, and end your marriages with nothing left. Enjoy that.”
“Anneliese, shut up! Stop talking nonsense!”
Melody saw the expressions of the other women change immediately. She snapped at Anneliese, grabbing a young woman who frowned at the scene, and addressed her and the elegant women beside her.
“Mrs. Westington, Reynelle, don’t believe a word she says. That girl twists truth into lies. Look at her–she had the gall to attack me right in front of you. I’m her elder! And look at Lenora. She left her battered.”
Melody’s eyes glistened red, her face lined with years of worry and weariness as she exhaled a long, sorrowful sigh.
Lenora covered her bruised face and wept silently, tears sliding down her cheeks.
“Anneliese, you knew I cared about Reynelle. You came here today to ruin tea with Mrs. Westington and Reynelle, didn’t you?
“Reynelle is Mr. Westington’s only daughter. She graduated from the Royal Arts Academy abroad. She’s a true socialite and prodigy. She is not a high school dropout, street–smart woman like you. You need to know your place and stop trying to interfere with our family.”
Anneliese’s gaze shifted to Mrs. Westington and Reynelle, and she finally recognized them.
The Westingtons had built a successful clothing and jewelry empire, and Reynelle was their only daughter.
Anneliese had thought Melody and Lenora would only protect Selina.
With her divorce finalized, they might even try to pair Zacharias up with Selina.
Now it was clear Melody had bigger ambitions.
Anneliese raised the high heel in her hand, and both Melody and Lenora flinched instinctively.

The shoe sliced through the air in a smooth arc, narrowly passing above their heads, and smashed into the pool behind them with a loud splash.
Anneliese grabbed a damp paper towel and wiped her hand clean. She stepped down the stairs and faced Mrs. Westington directly.
“Mrs. Westington, I believe you can do your own due diligence. Ms. Westington is your beloved daughter. There’s no such thing as too much investigation when it comes to her marriage.”
Before Mrs. Westington could reply, Melody forced a composed tone, though unease tinged her words.
“Your intention to interfere is obvious, Anne. Mrs. Westington won’t be fooled. Given that we used to be family, I’ll give you advice. There is no going back with Zacharias. Stop chasing him. If you need a man, I can introduce a few promising young men. Mrs. Lycaeum, I recall your nephew has opened up a few auto shops and is also freshly divorced?”
Mrs. Lycaeum stepped closer, inspecting Anneliese carefully, and nodded in acknowledgment.
Lenora snickered and leaned toward Anneliese.
“Mrs. Lycaeum’s nephew is over forty and has three kids. Don’t look down on him, though. You, on the other hand, have no reputation, no degree, no job, and only a destroyed marriage to show off. Forget about marrying into wealth. Mr. Lycaeum would be perfect for you. My mom is doing this for your own good.”
Anneliese’s eyes gleamed coldly. She let out a soft, almost floating laugh.
“Save your concern. I am already married. And with all your energy, you should focus on controlling Zacharias so he stops bothering me with calls from new numbers all the time. I would rather not make my husband mad.”
She turned to leave, refusing to waste another word on them. A sudden, incredulous voice stopped her.
“What did you just say, Anne? That cannot be true!”
Anneliese turned and saw Zacharias standing a short distance away. Her eyes were filled with
pure annoyance.
She had meant to leave with Zane and the others. This encounter was bad luck in full.
“Say it again! Tell me you’re not married!”

In an instant, Zacharias closed the distance. He reached for her hand.

Anneliese reacted immediately, stepping back a couple of paces to avoid his grasp.
Zacharias stepped forward again, but Melody’s face darkened. She rushed to intercept him.
She had just claimed in front of everyone that Anneliese was the one chasing Zacharias. His reaction now completely contradicted her story, leaving her feeling humiliated.
Her plan to lure Zacharias for a meeting with Reynelle had failed completely.
“Zacharias, look at what Anneliese did to Lenora! You-”
Melody tried to restrain him, but Zacharias‘ mind was consumed by Anneliese’s earlier declaration. She was married.
He ripped his hands free from Melody and stepped toward Anneliese again.
“What did you mean when you said you’re married?”
His face burned red with rage. His eyes darkened, pupils constricting with every surge of emotion.
Anneliese instinctively stepped back. Her voice was calm but firm. “I mean exactly what I said.”
