“You’re lying! Ha! We’ve only been divorced for five days, and now you tell me you’re married? That’s impossible!”
Zacharias‘ voice cracked, thick with disbelief, as if he were arguing with reality itself. He nodded slowly, his movements stiff and drained, his tone almost hopeless. “Anne, you’ve always been great at scaring me.”
He’s out of his mind, she thought.
Anneliese rolled her eyes and began walking, her heels clicking sharply on the pavement.
There was nothing left to say between them. Ex–husbands were a special kind of nuisance, relentless and irritating. No exceptions.
Zacharias shifted, as if to follow, but Melody seized his arm sharply.
“Zacharias! There’s someone I want you to know. This is Mrs. Westington, and this is her daughter, Ms. Reynelle Westington…”
Her words hung in the air, earnest but almost pleading, yet Zacharias didn’t glance at Reynelle
once.
He frowned, pulled his hand free, and said, “Mom, I still have things to say to Anne. You all enjoy your tea.”
Without waiting, he strode toward Anneliese, each step radiating determination.
Melody’s face paled, frustration tightening her features.
She swayed slightly, seeking support from Mrs. Westington, but Mrs. Westington only let out a cold, controlled laugh.
“From what I see, Mr. Shaw still carries feelings for his ex–wife. My daughter has no shortage of suitors. She will marry well. Do not step foot in my house again. Goodbye.”
With that, Mrs. Westington swept Reynelle along, their anger almost visible in the way they moved. Melody called after them, desperate, but no one looked back.
Outside the tea house, Zacharias finally caught up with Anneliese.
He grabbed her arm with firm insistence. “Anne, where are you going? I’ll walk with you. I also have something to discuss.”

Anneliese jerked her arm free, her eyes cold and unreadable. “Don’t touch me. I have nothing to discuss with you.”
Zacharias raised his hands, surrendering, his expression soft, almost indulgent.
“Fine. I won’t touch you. But just hear me out. Derek invited us to his silver wedding banquet with Mrs. Golding. I’ll pick you up. Please, okay?”
Anneliese’s pace quickened. She had already received a separate electronic invitation from Mrs. Golding.
She was heading back to Baytree and had no intention of attending. Her gift was ready to be delivered by someone else.
“I am not going. Zacharias, you’re my ex–husband, and that means you’re dead to me. From now on, when you see me, act like we’re strangers. No, we’re really strangers. Understood?”
Her face was icy, her voice sharp and impatient, cutting through the air like glass.
Zacharias moved to block her path, his long legs firm and imposing.
“Anne, Derek’s silver wedding directly affects Clauderias Tech and Crucible Group’s renewal contract for next year. You cannot do whatever you want about this. You are coming with me.”
Anneliese’s anger flared, heat rising in her chest. She laughed, sharp and incredulous, a sound that carried both disbelief and fury.
“How many times do I need to remind you? We are divorced! I am not your wife anymore. I am not the PR director of Clauderias Tech. I have no reason or obligation to attend your banquet. Step aside.”
Zacharias‘ face darkened, frustration etching deep lines across his handsome features. “Anne, the renewal is critical for Clauderias Tech. You know that. Mrs. Golding likes you, and you-”
“I do not care! Zacharias, even if Clauderias Tech goes bankrupt tomorrow, it has nothing to do with me. I used to help Mrs. Golding and open doors for you because I was your employee and your wife. But now I have no reason anymore! You’re not worth my time, much less my help!”
Zacharias‘ lips pressed into a thin line, his fists clenching as silence fell between them. Anneliese brushed past him, but a thought struck her, and she stopped abruptly.
“Before Clauderias Tech goes bankrupt, make sure you transfer five hundred million to me first.”

Anneliese froze, spinning back to him, disbelief radiating from every word.

Anneliese could barely contain her laughter, sharp and incredulous. “You believed him just because he said I gave consent? When did you get so gullible, Zacharias? So easily fooled?”
“Anne, you still own part of White Inc. You cannot just watch if the company struggles. The money is already transferred. Don’t get mad. If you come to the banquet, act like a loving couple around the Goldings, then help me snag the renewal, I will transfer another five hundred million to you. That is fair.”
Zacharias‘ lips curved slightly, confidence unwavering, as if money could bend her will.
But Anneliese’s eyes stayed cold and unyielding.
“Whatever financial dealings you have with the White family are none of my concern. If I do not see 500 million in my account before time is up, I’m filing for a lawsuit. Stop using money as leverage. You expect me to attend the banquet with you? Forget it. You will never put my husband in that position.”
