“And which department does she belong to? Oh, wait, your wife! Mr. Fullbuster, just a moment while I check…”
Zion felt Jonathan’s heavy stare burn into him, and his hands scrambled as he pulled out his phone.
“Mr. Fullbuster, she hasn’t contacted me.”
Jonathan’s brows knit into a hard frown.
Almost a full day had slipped by, and he still had not spoken to her.
She had not called. She had not sent even one WhatsApp message.
He knew his hours had been swallowed by endless work, and he had not had a second to spare.
But she was not the same. By now, she should have already arrived in Baytree for her vacation.
It was clear she had lost herself in time with her grandmother and had already forgotten about the husband she had just married.
A storm of frustration spread through him as he pressed the phone off with force, tossed it aside, and returned to his merciless pace of work.
“Documents.”
Zion froze.
He forced his mind back into order and quickly handed over the files for the next airport deal.
Jonathan flipped through the pages, his brow sinking deeper, carved like stone,
Zion’s chest felt tight. He wondered if there was a mistake in the numbers.
“How long will it take?” Jonathan asked.
“Mr. Fullbuster, if the next acquisition goes well, it will take us two and a half days.”
Jonathan’s eyes locked onto him. “I was asking how long it will take before my wife calls me.”
Zion nearly lost his breath.

How was he supposed to know that?
His mind had switched tracks so many times he felt his brain had collapsed.

“Anneliese, why do you make everything so painful? Five hundred million for ten percent of White Inc. is more than fair. You hurt your brothers for nothing, and now you’re just tasting the misery you invited.”
It was past two in the morning when Selina walked to the basement door.
A cashmere shawl clung to her shoulders as she peered through the iron bars into the crushing dark.
The air was damp and sharp with mold, heavy with cold.
In the corner, pressed against the wall, Anneliese’s frail frame was a shadow among broken junk. Her thin clothes clung to her, her arms squeezed tight around her shivering body. Her teeth rattled as her body shook, every breath draining her strength.
Her eyes stayed shut, and she gave Selina no answer.
She had sensed trouble in the car earlier and had tried to call Jessica for help.
The call never went through. The phone had been ripped from her hand before it could
connect.
Jessica probably thought she was safe in Baytree by now. Anneliese had kept her trip a secret because she had wanted to surprise her grandmother. She had not wanted her grandmother worrying about her flight or waiting at the airport. Now no one knew she was gone.
By morning, Jessica would realize something was wrong.
Anneliese told herself she just had to survive tonight.
Being locked in darkness was nothing new.
At the orphanage, she had been shoved into closets before. She had never been afraid of the dark.
“Anneliese, did you faint from fear? Oh no, Delilah, hurry and check if she really passed out!”
Selina’s voice rang with fake panic, followed by the shuffle of movement at the door.

:
Anneliese snapped upright, her nerves raw and sharp.
The darkness did not help with the fear at all.
She felt something fast scurry across her foot. Selina’s doing.
A rat.
Or maybe a snake.
