Perseus caught his younger brother as he stumbled, steadying him with both hands. His voice softened, his words laced with persuasion.
“Anne, I don’t know whose side you’ve taken or how you managed to convince that man to stand up for you, but anyone with that kind of power is either a criminal or something worse.
“You need to cut ties with him before he ruins you completely. Let us out right now. For the sake of family, we’ll forget this ever happened.”
When Jonathan came to rescue Anneliese, the White family wasn’t at home.
They rushed back only after hearing their house had been broken into and that someone had taken her away.
But by the time they arrived, strangers dressed in black had already taken control of the mansion. Each member of the family was dragged down into the basement and locked away in
the dark.
Perseus and the others had already decided that Anneliese must have gotten herself mixed up with some vicious crime ring.
They were certain she was leading herself straight to destruction.
Perseus believed his heartfelt words, part threat and part plea, would convince her to unlock the door. What he heard in return was her sharp, bitter laugh.
“Family? Don’t insult me. When I was locked down here before, burning with fever until I passed out, none of you cared that I was family. None of you even came to check if I was alive.
“If I had died quietly in this basement, you wouldn’t have noticed. You would have called me useless, a burden to the family, and you would have hidden my body without a second thought. That is exactly what you did four years ago!
Timothy watched his oldest son choke on silence. The man’s own face twisted, pride slipping away as he turned desperate.
“Anne, I know we made mistakes in the past. You need to let us make things right. Sweetheart, open the door for me. For your dad.
“Your mother can’t take it anymore. She can’t even speak. You’ve always had a soft heart, and I know you can’t stand to see her suffer. My head is splitting in pain. Help me upstairs like you used to, and give me one of those massages you learned just for me.”

Anneliese had always been easy to control. A warm look, a few soft words, and she would rush to the kitchen to brew coffee or make soup for the family. She had even studied massage just to please him.
Every time she touched his shoulders, she had glowed with joy.
Moments like those had been rare, but she had treasured them all the same.
“Enough,” Perseus cut in, his voice hard. “You love to read in my study. Open the door and I’ll let you in anytime, just like Selina.”
He gave Christopher a push, urging him to speak.
Christopher resisted, but he was too drained to hold back.
And Selina’s strength was fading fast. She couldn’t endure much longer.
Grinding his teeth, he forced the words out. “Open the d*mn door. Next time I race, I’ll let you watch the whole thing. That’s why you came down here, isn’t it? To open the door? Quit acting like you aren’t.”
Racing was Christopher’s pride. When Anneliese had first come back home, she had seen him take Selina to the track. Hoping to bond with her brother, she had begged to go too. But the second she touched the door of his car, he had shoved her down, scraping her arm bloody.
“A farm girl like you doesn’t deserve to touch my car. Do you have any idea what this costs? If I let you near it, the whole race would crash and burn.”
Even now, the sting of that humiliation pressed against her chest.
Her lips lifted in a faint smile. “Strange. I wonder how your precious car ended up covered in scratches from stray cats.”
Christopher’s eyes bulged. “You? You did that?”
That night, his car had been shredded by claws, left ruined beyond repair. He had never found the cause. To discover it was her almost unhinged him.
Anneliese’s smile deepened. Her beauty glowed, but her clear amber eyes made her look innocent.
With that sly grin, she seemed both sweet and dangerous, like someone who had turned pain into a weapon.

Christopher nearly lost control of his rage.
Anneliese had no interest in wasting another word.
Her smile lingered as she spoke. “Whoever told you I came here to let you out was wrong. I came here to watch you suffer. That’s what I wanted.”
Her words froze Timothy and his sons where they stood. Their disbelief twisted into horror.
Anneliese wasn’t joking. She turned away, laughing with Jessica as they headed for the stairwell.
The White men screamed until their throats broke, while Selina shoved Melanie aside and staggered for the door in panic.
She never made it. The iron gate above crashed shut, plunging them all into suffocating darkness again.
Outside, Jessica drew in the cool night air with a deep breath. A smile spread across her face as she shot Anneliese a teasing wink.
“Revenge feels incredible. And with Mr. Fullbuster on your side, it feels even better. Just for crushing the White family like this, he deserves a long, hot kiss as his prize.”
