Chapter 282 No Way Back
Carter hadn’t finished speaking when the call was cut off.
With a billion at stake, he didn’t take offense.

In the hospital room, Anneliese hadn’t expected that the moment she returned from the restroom with Nishay, the head nurse would inform her that a private room had just opened
- up.
Surprised and delighted, she quickly helped Nishay settle into the new space.
Though not large, the room came with its own bathroom, which already felt like a great improvement.
Anneliese called Nicole, whose grandfather had once served as the hospital’s deputy director. It was through Nicole that she had managed to get Nishay admitted.
She offered her thanks, but Nicole sounded puzzled.
“A private room? That wasn’t my grandfather’s doing. Did you ask someone else for help?”
Anneliese froze, recalling Zacharias‘ promise to pull some strings.
Frowning, she said, “There was someone, yes. Since my grandma is already taken care of, please don’t bother your grandfather anymore. Thanks again. I’ll treat you to dinner soon.”
Because of that, when Zacharias showed up at the hospital the next day, Anneliese forced herself to be a little more patient with him.
He made an extra effort to please, and Nishay seemed utterly charmed.
“Grandma, after this surgery you shouldn’t go back to Baytree. Stay with Anne and me so we can care for you. Besides, you know how my mom spoils kids and doesn’t know how to raise them. Once Anne has a baby, we’ll really need your help-”
Returning from the bathroom with a cleaned lunch box, Anneliese overheard Zacharias sitting by the bed, talking.
She frowned. “Zacharias!”
Zacharias glanced at her. Even when he saw her anger, he didn’t take it to heart. Instead, he gave Nishay a helpless smile.

“Grandma, my company is on track now, and our health checks showed we’re ready to start a family. Don’t you think it’s time for us to have a baby? Maybe you can talk to Anne for me.”
Nishay looked toward Anneliese. “I have to agree with Zacharias.”
Anneliese walked over and handed Nishay a glass of water. “You’ll need a full bladder for the exam later. Drink a little more.”
She threw Zacharias a sharp look, then stepped out of the room with him.
Her expression was tightly controlled. “Thank you for arranging the private room for my grandma.”
A flicker passed through his eyes, but he quickly curved his lips into a smile.
“It was the least I could do.”
“Once Grandma is through the surgery, I’ll tell her about the divorce. That’s why I don’t want you misleading her with all that talk. Stop wasting your energy on it. I hate it.”
Her voice grew colder, harder.
Zacharias clenched his fists. He believed he had done so much these past few days, and done it well.
But Anneliese’s attitude hadn’t softened in the slightest, and the disappointment clawed at him until it became unbearable.
The moment she turned to leave, he suddenly seized her shoulders and shoved her hard against the wall.
Before she could struggle, he pressed his body against hers, his gaze raw with pain.
“Anne, what do you want from me? Is it because we never slept together that you’re leaving me so coldly? If we had a child, would you finally come back to me?”
Back when they first started dating, Anneliese had lived through that horrifying night. The trauma left scars, and she resisted letting him near.
He had once let Selina’s insinuations poison his mind, convincing himself that Anneliese might not be pure, and the thought had left him uneasy enough to avoid touching her.
Over the year that followed, they had tried twice, but the moment he caught sight of the scar across her abdomen, his desire collapsed.

On their wedding night, he had truly wanted her. But then he discovered he was allergic to condoms, and with Anneliese’s condition making pregnancy impossible at the time, everything unraveled.
One mishap led to another, dragging things out endlessly.
The day Anneliese went to his company, she had just received her fertility clearance report. For Zacharias, that knowledge ignited a thousand regrets.
If only she had known later, he thought. They would have crossed that final line and been husband and wife in truth. Maybe even parents by now. She wouldn’t be able to turn her back on him then.
Or perhaps, he told himself in his darkest moments, he should never have cared about her health at all. He should have taken her then, and she wouldn’t be so firm in pushing him away
now.
That thought burned in his head as he pressed against her, breathing in the familiar scent of her body, his self–control slipping fast. He lowered his head to kiss her.
But in the very next second, a fierce hiss of spray cut through the air.
“Ah!”
Zacharias screamed as Anneliese whipped a can of pepper spray from her pocket and blasted him full in the face.
His eyes clamped shut in agony as tears streamed uncontrollably.
And that wasn’t enough. Anneliese’s knee drove hard into his most vulnerable spot.
Not far away, Carter stopped dead in shock. The two male doctors walking beside him instinctively pressed their legs together at the sight.
“Anneliese!”
