Chapter 287 The Heiress and the Ex
Talking about the White family’s endless mess made the wait less unbearable.
The light above the operating room went dark.

Anneliese rushed to the door. Carter came out quickly. Before she could even ask, he pulled off his mask and smiled.
“Mission accomplished. The surgery went very well. Ms. Morris will be wheeled out any minute. She’ll stay in the ICU for observation, but she should wake up within two hours at most.”
Anneliese thanked him right away. Carter gave a nod and headed off to rest.
Jessica watched him leave. “Well, well. Mr. Fullbuster’s friends really are something else.”
“All of them? Who else?” Anneliese nudged Jessica’s shoulder.
Now that Nishay’s surgery had gone smoothly, she was finally in the mood to joke.
Jessica’s ears turned red. “Come on. We know your Mr. Fullbuster is the best one of all. Satisfied?”
This time, it was Anneliese’s face that burned hot.
Nishay’s kidneys weren’t strong, and her platelet function was abnormal. After the operation, she developed bleeding complications and, with her weak immunity, ended up with pneumonia.
Fortunately, Carter had acted quickly with the right treatment. The crisis passed, and two days later, Nishay was stable enough to be moved into a regular ward.
It had been a major surgery, and at her age, caution was essential. She would need to stay in the hospital for another two weeks.
But the danger was behind them. The weight pressing on Anneliese’s chest finally lifted, giving her the space to deal with the Sunrise Residence,
She contacted a real estate agent she knew, asking him to take photos and find a buyer as soon as possible.
That house was nothing but proof of her failed two–year marriage. Keeping it around was unbearable.

But just because she had stayed at Sunrise Residence for two days, Zacharias had started acting entitled again.
That evening, while Anneliese stood outside Maple Bay waiting for the pet carrier to bring Meatloaf back, a WhatsApp message popped up from Nicole.
‘What’s this? Did you get back together with Zacharias?‘
‘What?‘
Anneliese stared at the screen, baffled. Nicole immediately sent her a video.
It was a small gathering inside a luxurious private room. A few men and women sat in the lounge area, chatting over wine. Most of them were part of Zacharias‘ social circle.
Some were his old college classmates, others were contacts he had made in recent years.
Although Anneliese had been with Zacharias for years, he had never been eager to bring her along to socialize.
Whenever he went out, she was left behind–except on nights when he drank too much and she had to deliver medicine or pick him up. That was how she had met some of these people, enough to recognize them by face if not by name.
But now the conversation was clearly centered on her.
“Did Anneliese really divorce Zacharias?”
“She posted
ask him then.”
on Facebook herself. Why would she lie? Zacharias will be here soon. You can
The camera shifted, catching two figures walking through the doorway.
The man wore a sharp suit, his handsome face lit with a smile, every movement polished and effortlessly charming.
Behind him walked a petite woman with a delicate air. She wore a white sweater dress and short leather boots, and she handed a cashmere coat to the man with quiet grace.
He accepted it, hanging it on the rack beside him. The easy familiarity between them sparked teasing laughter around the room.
“Zacharias, are you introducing us to your new wife?”
“Zacharias, are you really divorced?”

“One thing’s for sure–divorcing her was the right move. What did Anneliese ever have to offer Zacharias? No degree, no reputation. She’s only pretty, and even her health is fragile. If Zacharias hadn’t pitied her enough to marry her, she probably would’ve ended up working as a hostess. And she still had the nerve to flirt around and embarrass him at the White family banquet.”
“She clung to the title of Mrs. Shaw for so long, but what about the woman Zacharias really loved–Selina? Now that Selina’s back in the country, at least Anneliese had the sense to step aside and make room.”
“Zacharias and Selina make such a perfect pair. Selina graduated from an elite university overseas. She’s talented in everything she does, and she’s an engineer at Aerolux Airways! So, tell us, when are you two getting married? We’re waiting for the wedding banquet.”
“Enough! Stop stirring up nonsense! The first move after getting back on track isn’t going to be some petty act like divorcing a wife. Do you think I, Zacharias, would do something like that?”
His voice cut through the room, sharp with anger.
He strode over to the sofa, crossed one leg over the other, and continued, “Anne and I are only temporarily divorced. We’ll be remarrying soon. I’ll pretend I didn’t hear all this chatter, but don’t let it come up again.”
But his measured tone carried little weight, and no one took it seriously.
“Zacharias, do you realize how awkward that makes Selina feel?” someone teased.
Selina smoothed her skirt and sat down beside him with a smile.
“Why would I feel awkward? Anne is my sister. I took the love of our parents for so many years that I already owe her a debt I can’t repay. How could I be selfish enough to take anything else from her? Tonight, I’m here as the White heiress, asking for your investments. Running into Zacharias was just a coincidence, nothing more. Please don’t read too much into it.”
She spoke as if Zacharias‘ reconciliation with Anneliese was her own generous decision–not to compete, but to give him back.
And of course, she made sure to emphasize her role as the White heiress, using the moment to build her image as a strong, independent woman.
