Anneliese walked into the kitchen and opened the microwave. Inside were two scrambled–egg croissant sandwiches and a plate of sausage roll–ups.
She also spotted a pot of pumpkin soup, kept warm and ready to serve, with portions clearly meant for more than one person.
Jonathan had probably considered that she was going to the hospital to see Nishay and had even prepared a portion for Nishay.
A warmth spread through Anneliese’s chest as she looked down at Meatloaf circling her feet.
“Did he make all of this? Did he really make it himself?”
“Woof! Woof! Woof!”
Meatloaf lifted her head and barked, as if trying to answer–though whether it was a yes or a no remained unclear.
Anneliese took the plate of breakfast, sat at the table, and took a big bite of the sandwich. She snapped a picture of her plate and sent it to Jonathan.
‘Delicious! Thanks for preparing breakfast for me!
Jonathan was probably busy, because it took him a long while to respond.
She sipped two more spoonfuls of pumpkin soup, pleasantly surprised by how well it was cooked.
But a question nagged at her–Jonathan could cook. So why had he been asking her to go upstairs every day to play chef before?
Still pondering this, Anneliese left the kitchen, carrying the food container to Nishay’s hospital
room.
She pushed the door open and was greeted by the sound of Carter and Nishay talking inside.
“Yes, my granddaughter really excels at everything! Too bad she’s already married–she and my grandson–in–law get along wonderfully and are perfectly suited for each other. Dr. Chevalier, you’re also impressive, young, and accomplished. If only my granddaughter weren’t taken, I’d definitely introduce her to you.”
“No! Please, don’t do that, not at all!”

“What? Dr. Chevalier, what do you mean by that? Haven’t you seen my granddaughter? She’s beautiful, isn’t she?”
“Don’t worry,
out.”
that’s not what I mean. I’m just afraid a certain someone might kill me if he finds
Anneliese froze, speechless.
“Haha, Dr. Chevalier, you mean my grandson–in–law? He and my granddaughter have known each other since childhood. They’re deeply attached–it’s really hard to say how things might turn out if he finds out.”
Nishay chuckled cheerfully.
Anneliese felt a chill crawl across her scalp. Carter hadn’t been talking about Zacharias–he had clearly meant Jonathan.
She quickly called out, “Grandma, I’m here!”
Both Nishay and Carter looked up. Carter, hands tucked into his white coat pockets, raised an eyebrow in a way that carried a pointed meaning.
“Ms. Morris is recovering well. No complications.” Carter nodded and left the room.
Once he stepped out, he dialed Jonathan.
“Tsk, Jonathan, you really can’t catch a break. Even with a marriage certificate, you’re still unofficial…”
With someone like Jonathan, even being legally married didn’t give him full recognition, so Carter couldn’t resist teasing him a little. It was also a friendly warning–making sure his buddy didn’t get tricked by Anneliese.
“Dr. Chevalier, please wait.”
Before Jonathan could answer, footsteps sounded behind Carter. Anneliese had come running
after him.
Carter paused, instinctively slipping his lit phone into his pocket.
Anneliese stood in front of him, smiling with gratitude. “Thank you so much for the past couple of days…”
“No need to thank me. Thank Jonathan.”

Anneliese felt a hint of warning in Carter’s words.

She hadn’t even told Nishay about the divorce yet, so mentioning Jonathan was completely off–limits.
Carter had been brought in by Jonathan, and Anneliese guessed that in Carter’s eyes, she must look like the ultimate heartbreaker–teasing Jonathan while he, of course, seemed like the poor, gullible fool.
She didn’t want Carter to have that impression. It would make Jonathan look bad.
She met Carter’s gaze steadily. “Dr. Chevalier, because of my grandma’s health, I haven’t told her about my divorce and remarriage yet. But I want you to know I have no intention of holding onto my ex, and I would never do anything to betray Jonathan. Once my grandma’s health improves, I’ll explain everything to her.”
Even though her marriage to Jonathan was just a contract, she didn’t want his friends to think he was being cheated on.
Carter could clearly hear that she was defending Jonathan’s honor.
Glancing at the phone in his pocket, he wondered how much Jonathan was silently enjoying this. He felt ridiculous for getting worked up over someone else’s marital affairs–only to end up being force–fed a slice of romance.
Still, because of Anneliese’s words, a genuine smile appeared on Carter’s face. He nodded.
“When Jonathan heard your grandma was hospitalized, he immediately asked me to arrange the operation and be the lead surgeon. I’ve never seen him care about a woman like that before. Ms. Claude, you need to treat our Jonathan a little better.”
“Oh, of course! I will.”
Anneliese felt a sudden flush of awkwardness and the weight of responsibility, as if Carter had just entrusted Jonathan to her care.
