Anneliese smiled and nodded, and Carter gave a brief smile before turning to leave.
Watching his back, she smiled to herself–perhaps it was true that like attracted like.

She found Jonathan’s friends both impressive and easy to get along with. Carter was one such example, and Jackson and Joel were no different.
That day, she had posted a photo on Facebook of the ravioli Nishay had made. Joel had liked it and commented that it looked delicious.
One of Zacharias‘ friends, however, had written a snide remark. ‘Plain food like this? Really showing off?‘
That had reminded her to clean up her WhatsApp contacts. She went through the list and deleted everyone from Zacharias‘ circle.
Only after entering the office did Carter pull out his phone–sure enough, the call was still connected.
“Wow, first time I’ve seen you this patient,” he said, clicking his tongue.
Jonathan signed two documents with smooth, effortless strokes before replying, “I’m hang up now.”
“Wait. Don’t you have anything to say?”

“Hm, my wife is wonderful, devoted, and loyal. I don’t need anyone else to tell me that.”
His tone was boastful yet secretly delighted. Even through the phone, the scent of his infatuation was palpable.
Carter huffed in irritation but added, “Still, you’re lucky. She really looks out for you.”
Anneliese was stunning, but what kind of beauty in their social circle wouldn’t have caught their attention?
From full–figured to delicate, there were plenty who could rival her looks.
Yet Jonathan had fallen for Anneliese–this woman who seemed ordinary at first glance and carried so many complications.
As friends, they could only offer their blessings–not because they truly approved of her, but

because they respected Jonathan’s choice.

On the contrary, Jonathan had fallen so fast and so completely that his friends were genuinely worried–afraid that Anneliese might not truly deserve the way he treated her.
But in that moment, Carter seemed to understand why Jonathan, the ultimate cold, unattached type, would actually fall for her.
Anneliese carried a kind of pure sincerity, a person who knew how to take care of others.
It sounded like a simple trait, but it mattered more than most people realized. Any man living with a woman like her would be in good hands.
These days, far too many people took others‘ kindness for granted, especially beautiful women who often thought very highly of themselves, demanding much while giving little.
“Enough sweet talk. Still looking for additional investment?”
Jonathan’s calm, measured voice came through the line, and Carter chuckled.
“Mr. Fullbuster, you’re brilliant-

He thought he had it all figured out, only to be interrupted mid–sentence.
“Nope. I’m gonna spend my money on my wife.”
“How much can your wife even spend?”
“She’s a researcher too.”
Carter froze.
The news dropped like a bombshell.
“Jonathan, you can’t play favorites! Are you the kind of guy who forgets his friends for a pretty face?”
“Don’t doubt it. That’s exactly me.”
With that, Jonathan hung up.
Carter just stared at his phone, speechless.
Meanwhile, Anneliese turned and entered the hospital room, where Nishay was eating the pumpkin soup she had brought.

The soup smelled fragrant. The pumpkins had been carefully deseeded, their sweet aroma blending gently into the broth. Though simple and light, it was perfect for someone like Nishay, who had just undergone surgery.
“Grandma, is it good?”
“Delicious, absolutely delicious!”
Nishay took a few more spoonfuls, then set the bowl aside and grabbed Anneliese’s hand.
“Tell me–did you and Zacharias have a fight?”
“No… we didn’t.”
“You still say no! Do you think I’m blind and deaf? I’ve been here for several days. I just had surgery, and Melody and Lenora haven’t even shown up.
“They really just happened to be out traveling? Every time Zacharias comes by, you’re so cold, and you two talk behind my back. If that’s not a fight, what is?”
Seeing she couldn’t hide it, Anneliese laughed. “You really are sharp, Grandma.”
She had been wondering whether to hint at her intention to divorce and gauge Nishay’s reaction, when Nishay continued: “Zacharias has been busy building his career these past few years. It’s only natural that he hasn’t always paid attention to you.
“But I can see he cares. As his wife, you need to be a little more understanding. Start a family soon, and your marriage will stabilize. Don’t give other women a chance to interfere.”
Anneliese knew Nishay’s views were old–fashioned–believing a woman should be gentle, patient, and loyal, devoted to her family, raising children, and keeping her marriage intact.
Looking into Nishay’s worried, earnest eyes, Anneliese couldn’t speak. She simply nodded.
“Don’t worry so much. Just focus on getting your strength back.”
