I parked my truck in the driveway, the engine’s rumble fading as I turned the key. The sun was setting, casting a warm orange glow over the quiet neighborhood. I could already feel the tension slipping from my shoulders, but my wolf Cooper was on edge, more so than usual. Ever since Lila had come into my life, my wolf had been in a constant state of heightened awareness, always restless, always focused on her.
I stepped out of the truck, grabbed my bag from the passenger seat, and made my way to the front door. The house felt different now, knowing she was inside. A part of me-a very large my mind. part-couldn’t wait to see her. But there was also that nagging fear in the back of She was still fragile, still processing everything that had happened to her, and the last thing she needed was for me to complicate her life even more.
When I opened the door, the smell of something sweet greeted me, mingling with the scent of fresh paper and ink and Lila. I followed the sound of soft music into the living room and froze in the doorway.
Lila was curled up on the sofa, a blanket draped over her legs, a pint of ice cream in her hand, and a sketchpad resting on her knees. Her fiery red hair fell in loose waves around her face, and she looked so relaxed, so lost in her own little world, that it made my heart skip a beat.
She is f*****g perfection…
My wolf stirred, pushing at his control, wanting to be closer to her. To protect her, to be able to hold her, to let her know she was safe. I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to stay where I was, leaning against the doorframe.
“Hey,” I said softly, trying not to startle her.
Lila looked up, her blue eyes meeting mine, and a small smile tugged at the corners of her lips.
“Hey. I didn’t hear you come in.”
“Long day,” I said, moving into the room, trying to ignore the way my pulse quickened just being near her.
“What are you working on?”
She shrugged, a little self-conscious.
“Just some sketches. Nothing special.”

I walked over to the sofa, sitting on the armrest beside her.
“Can I see?”

She hesitated for a moment, then handed me the sketchpad. As I flipped through the pages, I was taken aback by the talent that lay in front of me. Each drawing was filled with intricate details, capturing emotions and expressions with a depth that surprised the hell out of me.
“Lila, these are incredible,” I said, genuine admiration in my voice.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were this good?”
She blushed, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
“I didn’t think they were that great, honestly. Just something I do to pass the time.”
“You’re kidding, right? This is real talent.” I looked up at her, my gaze intense.
“You could seriously do something with this.”
Lila’s eyes brightened at my words, and for a moment, she looked like she was about to say something, but then she hesitated, biting her lip. I could see the doubt in her eyes, the way she was still unsure of herself.
“Well, you might not have to worry about that for long,” I said, handing the sketchpad back to
her.
“I talked to a friend of mine at the art center today. They’re always looking for new talent, and they might need an extra pair of hands. I’m taking you over there tomorrow to meet them.”
Her eyes widened in surprise.
“Really? You did that for me?”
I nodded, trying to play it cool despite the warmth spreading through my chest at seeing her so happy.
“Of course. I think you’d be great there.”
Before I even knew what was happening, Lila had set the sketchpad aside and thrown her arms around me, hugging me tightly. I froze for a split second, my breath catching in my throat. The feel of her body pressed against mine, the scent of her hair, it was almost too much for both me and my wolf to handle.
I wrapped my arms around her, holding her close, trying to keep myself from giving in to the primal urge to just kiss her, to claim her as my own. But she was so soft, so warm, and it was everything I could do not to lose control.

Lila pulled back slightly, looking up at me with a smile that made my heart race.
“Thank you, Skye. You have no idea what this means to me.”

Our faces were inches apart, and for a moment, the world seemed to narrow down to just the two of us. I could see the way her gaze dropped to my lips, could feel the way her breath hitched, and I knew she was thinking the same thing I was.
But she was vulnerable, and I couldn’t take advantage of that. I had to be careful, had to give her time to heal, even if every instinct in my body was screaming at me to close the distance between us and just do it. f**k it… the last thing I wanted to become was ‘the rebound guy’.
So…I gently pulled away, clearing my throat. And hating myself for doing so.
“I’m just glad I could help,” I said, trying to keep his voice steady.
Lila blinked as if coming back to reality, and she quickly let go of me, her cheeks flushing
with color.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to…”
“No need to apologize,” I said, forcing a smile.
“I’m just glad you’re happy.”
She gave me a small smile in return, but I could see the confusion in her eyes, the way she was still trying to process what had just happened. I could feel it too, the magnetic pull between us, the connection that seemed to grow stronger every time we were near each
other.
“Anyway,” I said, standing up, trying to put some distance between us before I did something I’d regret.
“We’ll head to the art center tomorrow morning, and see what they’ve got for you.”
Lila nodded, looking down at her sketchpad, her fingers tracing the edges of the paper.
“Yeah, that sounds good.”
I watched her for a moment longer, my heart aching with the need to protect her, to make her feel safe. But for now, I had to be patient. I had to wait, even if it was the hardest thing I’d ever
done.
“I’ll let you get back to your sketching,” I said, forcing myself to turn away.
“Dinner will be ready in a couple of hours. I’m heading into the shower first.”

“Thanks, Skye,” she said softly, and I could hear the gratitude in her voice, the way she was starting to trust me, starting to let me in.
As I walked out of the room, my wolf stirred restlessly inside me, frustrated with the slow pace, but understanding that we had to be careful. Lila wasn’t just anyone-she was our mate, and we had to protect her, even from our own desires. But one thing was clear: Lila was starting to see me, really see me, and that was more than I could have hoped for. I just had to hold on a little longer, be there for her, and when the time was right, I’d show her just how much she meant to me. But right now, I needed to get into the f*****g shower and rub one out, because the fact that I had just been able to hold my mate in my arms, feel her soft skin underneath my fingertips, feel her hair rub against my check and had the pleasure of having her lips inches apart from my own, made me f*****g horny, to say the least.
f**k…
this was going to be so much harder than I had anticipated!
