But there’s something I don’t understand,Savannah said, her brows knitting together as she shifted on my bed, pulling her legs beneath her like she was settling in for a serious talk

After everything that had happened on the training field, she’d taken me straight here, Riley trailing close behind us. And once the door was closed, it all came spilling out of me. Every ugly truth I had kept bottled up. How I had approached Oliver, thinking I could handle him. How Jenna had ruled the school like some untouchable queen bee, using me as one of her favorite targets. How they had humiliated me and turned me into a punchline. I told them everythingno more halftruths, no more holding back

And then I told them about Gage. Again. The way he had been patient with me when no one else had been. The way he had been gentle, loving, so unshakably steady in a way that made me feel seen, safe, and wanted all at once. My voice wavered when I said his name, but I couldn’t stop myself from repeating the things he had done for me, how he had made me feel like maybejust maybeI was worth something

Savannah’s gaze locked on mine, sharp but thoughtful, like she was trying to piece together a puzzle I hadn’t even realized existed. Riley and I both stared at her, waiting for her to explain what she meant. Honestly, I was confused, too. My body was still buzzing with the echoes of Gage’s words earlierwords that had made me want to run into his arms, to beg him to hold me, to take me far away where none of this mess could touch us. Where it was just him and me, no noise, no judgment

But then the other part of methe one that always ruined everythingreminded me of his sister. Of the way she looked at me with pure disdain. Of the whispers and the stares and the cruel games she loved to play. And worse, I couldn’t stop imagining what his family would think if they knew. How fast the story would spread, how reporters would turn my life into another scandal

It’s clear he cares for you,” Savannah said finally, her tone steady, her expression concentrated like she was laying out undeniable facts. He had no problem claiming you in front of the entire school. He doesn’t seem to care about who he hurts if it means protecting you. So tell me, why are you not with him?”

My mouth parted, my eyes widenedbut nothing came out. Of all the ways I thought she might misunderstand, this wasn’t one of them

Riley leaned forward, nodding at Savannah’s words. Yeah, I’m wondering the same thing. At first, I thought he was some creep, you know? A little too persistent. But he’s not. He’s just…

completely in love with you. And he’s willing to take on everything, even when it’s way too much for one person to handle.”

ButMy voice cracked as I searched for somethinganythingthat could explain the mess inside me. But his sister? The words tumbled out weakly, like if I said them out loud, they’d suddenly justify everything I was doing

Riley arched a brow, unimpressed. Is a cunt. Yeah. And so what?”

Savannah folded her arms, her tone firm but not unkind. “Exactly. Just because she’s cruel doesn’t mean Gage will ever be that way with you. Don’t punish him for someone else’s sins.”

I was dumbstruck, my mouth doing that stupid, useless thing where it opens but nothing comes out. I didn’t know how to respond to what Savannah and Riley were arguing, or how to untangle the mess of feelings inside me. Deep down I knew who I was: Bree. Not a trophy on an arm, not someone used to flashes and applause. I was the girl who liked quiet corners, secondhand clothes, messy hair in a bun. I had no idea how to be the football captain’s wife

-how to smile at cameras, how to take being stared at, how to handle the constant commentary. The spotlight felt like a foreign language I’d never learn

Stillsome part of me softened at the idea. Maybe I could survive the glare if it meant Gage was beside me, his hand warm around mine, his body holding me safe every night. Maybe the tradeoff would be worth it if nights ended with him wrapped around me and mornings began with him tucking my hair behind my ear. The memory of camp, of him being present and patient and gentle, made my chest ache in a way that had nothing to do with fear

That’s what you’re scared of, isn’t it?Savannah asked, sliding into my space and dropping her hand over mine. Her squeeze was small but firm, like an anchor

I looked down at our joined hands, feeling suddenly small and exposed. I guess,” I whispered, the words bittersweet in my mouth. What if he only likes the chase? What if once he has me, he won’t care anymore? The thought sat ugly and real between us

That’s ridiculous,Riley scoffed, earning a soft nudge from Savannah. He’s not like that.”

Savannah exhaled slowly, her expression softening as she leaned forward, the kind of earnest look that made me want to believe her. Listen, Bree. We can’t let past hurts dictate our future. If you want that tall, godlike football player, then go get him. He’s already in love with youthat’s obvious. Make him fall harder. Show him how incredible your life together could be. You are amazing. He knows it, we know it. Now you need to know it too.”

Her conviction felt like a hand on my back, steadying me. I swallowed a lump of something that tasted like both shame and hope. But shouldn’t Iwork on myself first?I asked, cheeks burning. It sounded like the safe option, the grownup one

What do you mean?Savannah asked, tilting her head

I meanI’m not pretty like him. I don’t know makeup. I wear weird clothes. I don’t look like someone who belongs beside a football star.Admitting it felt humiliating, the words slipping out small and ashamed

Savannah threw her head back and laughedthe sound bright and full in the roommaking Riley snort and, despite myself, tugging a smile to my lips

Oh, Bree,” she said, dropping onto the bed and pulling me into a quick, fierce hug. He doesn’t care about that. But if you want, I can totally give you a makeover. No biggie.”

Riley’s grin turned wicked in that way she sometimes had. “Besides, you’re starting with the shrink next week, right? Why not work on yourself while you’re with him? He could, like, nurture your inner child or whatever. Let him be your daddy.” She said it as a tease, but there was a sliver of mischievous truth that made me both cringe and consider it

Oh my God,” I groaned, burying my face into Savannah’s neck as if I could hide there forever. Heat burned across my cheeks, crawling down my throat

Jesus, Riley,” Savannah laughed, her voice muffled against my hair. Bree doesn’t need a daddy.”

Oh, please.Riley’s laugh was sharp and unbothered. Don’t tell me Goldilocks doesn’t enjoy a bit of light spanking.I gasped, jerking back, my face hotter than the sun. Riley’s grin only widened. I bet he’s a real freak once you get him to open up.”

Okay, shut up now.Savannah’s tone was faux stern, though her lips twitched at the corners. She pulled me back from her embrace, her hands framing my face with surprising tenderness. What do you think, Bree? You ready for this?”

I bit my lip, my eyes flicking between the two of them. They weren’t mocking me. They weren’t scheming behind my back. They were here, these two amazing girls who had somehow slipped into my life and decided to stay. For the first time in a long time, I felt supported. They weren’t trying to tear me down; they wanted to build me up, in whatever way they knew how

You really think I can do this?I asked softly, glancing between them, my heart thudding hard in my chest

Savannah’s face lit up like I’d just handed her the moon. f**k yeah, you can!she grinned, the words bursting out of her with so much certainty it made my eyes sting

You got her to swear!Riley cackled, clutching her stomach. The sound was contagious, pulling a laugh out of me too. Savannah rolled her eyes and shoved Riley halfheartedly, but the smile never left her face

You can do anything, Bree,Riley said, her voice softer now, more serious. You just gotta put your mind to it.”

I nodded, the weight of their confidence sinking into me until it started to feel like my own. A small smile tugged at my lips, refusing to be contained. All right then. I’m gonna go get that football player.”

Savannah squealed so loudly I jumped, her joy spilling out of her like a firework. Riley just laughed at her reaction

Oh my God, I’m going to turn you into the most delectable girl on campus,” Savannah declared, eyes gleaming with mischief. We’ll do something with your hair, definitely play with makeup. How do you feel about your wardrobe?”

Don’t go changing everything about her,Riley said, pushing herself up from the bed. We don’t want him to fall out of love with her again.”

Nonsense,” Savannah huffed, waving her hand as if Riley’s words were ridiculous. He doesn’t even notice what she wears. All he sees is her.”

You sound so sure,” I said, nerves fluttering in my stomach like butterflies

I’m positive,” Savannah beamed, her confidence unshakable. And what better reason for a makeover than the party on Friday?”

There’s a party?My brows furrowed

Oh yes,Riley smirked. Blakely Hall. It’s gonna be packed.”

Savannah spun toward her desk, already rifling through something. And I’ve just decided that you’re going to get laid that night.”

The world stopped. My eyes widened until they hurt. Get laid?!I squeaked, staring at her like she had just grown horns

Exactly.Savannah grinned, tossing me a wicked wink. You’re going to seduce Mr. Football Player, and he’s going to orgasm all of that tension right out of you.”

Riley doubled over, laughter bursting out of her. You truly are a problem fixer, huh?”

Savannah just lifted her chin proudly. I know what our girl needs. She needs serotonin. And what better way to get it than with the very willing, very handsome, very muscular man who follows her around like a puppy?”

But-I started, flustered

No buts.Savannah cut me off with a raised hand. “It’s decided. You just lean back and enjoy.”

Oh, I bet she’s going to enjoy,” Riley laughed again, and my face burned scarlet, the room

echoing with their laughter and my mortification
