Anneliese turned Jonathan’s wrist in her hand, studying how the watch sat against his skin. A little pride swelled in her chest, like she’d pulled off something clever.
“Feels right?” she asked.
She kept her eyes fixed on the watch, but when she finally looked up, she realized he wasn’t even checking the gift. He was staring straight at her. The intensity of his gaze made her blush, and she swiftly let go.
“It’s perfect,” Jonathan replied, his voice steady and smooth. “I like it a lot.”
Her eyelashes fluttered as the bet suddenly flashed back into her mind. She grabbed her phone and took a quick glance at the chat.
He had sent her a photo of the watch.
“You got it right,” she teased. “That makes you the winner. So, what do I owe you?”
Jonathan kept quiet, just giving a faint smile. He wasn’t going to admit he’d guessed her move the instant she went viral with the watch. He’d been waiting for it back then and had even felt a pang of disappointment when it never showed up.
“Let me think.” He grinned. “Food first.”
Jonathan uncorked the wine and filled each of their glasses. They dined at a leisurely pace. As the sun dipped outside the vast glass windows, the night crept in, spreading like ink across the horizon.
Nishay’s surgery had been weighing on Anneliese’s mind for the past few days, and she hadn’t realized how much more she was drinking than usual. By the time the candles flickered lower, her cheeks warmed and her head felt pleasantly light.
Chin propped on her palm, she tipped back the last drop of wine and looked at the man across from her. In the soft glow, he seemed impossibly handsome.
“So?” she teased, her voice husky with the wine. “Have you made up your mind yet? If you don’t ask me tonight, don’t come complaining to me tomorrow.”
Her eyes were clouded, her lips were red, and the corner of her smile almost seemed to be daring him.
Jonathan spun the wine glass between his fingers, took a leisurely sip, and then spoke, “Come

here. Kiss me.”
Her eyes widened. Did he just say that?
He leaned back in his chair, totally at ease, as he waited for her to make a move.
“You really think I’m that drunk?” she muttered, her cheeks burning.
“Are you?” His low chuckle made the air feel heavier.
She wasn’t, which only made her heart pound harder.
“Maybe I am…” she whispered.
“So, getting drunk gets you out of a bet?” He raised an eyebrow, his expression challenging, as if daring her to back down.
Her chest ignited with heat. What am I afraid of? A deal’s a deal. She shoved back her chair, slammed her hand on the table, and strode toward him.
They’d kissed before. Once, he’d kissed her so deeply she could still feel it–then left her. She’d kissed him plenty of times, at least in her fantasies. Fantasies where she’d tackled him on a hospital bed, climbed on top of him, ripped his tie, and begged for her kiss back.
Cheh… this is just me finally making that dream real–nothing to it.
Her steps faltered as she drew closer. His dark eyes held hers, steady and calm, stripping away her boldness bit by bit.
Anneliese thought, Why the hell are my legs turning to jelly now?
“Close your eyes,” she blurted.
His lips curved, but he tilted his head and obeyed,
She turned quickly, ready to run.
Jonathan didn’t need to open his eyes to know. His arm shot out, grabbing her waist, and with one swift tug, she ended up on his lap.
Her lips parted in shock, eyes wide.
“Taking off again?” His voice was low, playful. “Really going to bail?”
Mortified, Anneliese buried her face against his chest.

Jonathan laughed, watching her cover her face with her hands. “They say booze gives people courage, but you’re clearly the exception. Maybe I should just call you my little coward. Let’s

He had been about to let her off with an IOU.
Before he could finish, her head snapped up and her cheeks flushed. She seized his tie, pulling him close and kissing him fiercely.
Jonathan stunned.
Her kiss was fierce, tasting of wine and sweetness. Heat coiled in his chest, sharp and sudden. He forgot to close his eyes, too caught in the sight of her so close.
Her lashes trembled, and her cheeks flushed under the chandelier’s glow. Her lips moved against his, and for the first time, he felt himself tangled in a net he couldn’t escape.
