She hadn’t said a word, yet Selina was quick to assume the little girl was Anneliese’s stepdaughter.
Zacharias went even further, somehow convinced the child was Jonathan’s illegitimate daughter.

Anneliese quietly pulled the little girl a few steps back, seemingly worried she’d catch their brand of crazy.
The girl’s face came into view.
Zacharias lowered his head to look, but he was surprised to find that the child didn’t look like Jonathan at all.
Why did she faintly resemble Anneliese when she was younger, though?
If not for the fact that Anneliese had been with him since she turned eighteen, he might have suspected she had secretly given Jonathan a daughter.
“Who is she, Anne?” Zacharias grabbed Anneliese’s wrist, to which she laughed in anger.
“Why can’t a child be around me? Do we have to be related for that?”
These lunatics had gone so far that they were scaring the child.
She shook off Zacharias‘ hand just as Derek and Marlowe walked over.
“What’s with all the chatter? What are you guys talking about?”
It turned out their squabble had already drawn quite a crowd.
Derek was a middle–aged man with a slight beer belly, but his thick hair had been carefully styled for the evening.

Anneliese quickly put on a smile as well.
“I was just about to. Congratulations on your Silver Jubilee! May harmony and joy last through the years.”
Derek chuckled, glancing at Zacharias.
“Your wife really has a way with words, Zacharias. You’re a lucky man,” he said.
Marlowe waved Anneliese over warmly.
“Always the sweet talker. Come, let me introduce you to a few ladies.”
However, Selina couldn’t stand seeing Anneliese in the spotlight, basking in the Goldings‘ favor.
She stepped forward with a smile.
“Mr. and Mrs. Golding, you guys are proof that happily ever after does exist. Your marriage is as sweet as ever, and you’re practically glowing!
“Needless to say, we’re all a little envious. We’d love to hear your tips on making a marriage work, Mrs. Golding–just don’t keep them all for Anne!”
She glanced at her two so–called friends, and they quickly chimed in.
“That’s right! Seeing how Ms. Claude and Mr. Shaw’s marriage has fallen apart, she would need Mrs. Golding’s advice even more.”
They added, “But then again, failure is the mother of success–at least Ms. Claude has some experience. For us unmarried women, your guidance would be even more valuable!”
Seeing how fond Marlowe was of Anneliese, and how pleasant the atmosphere had Zacharias smiled gently to himself.

But just as Anneliese was playing along without spoiling things, Selina suddenly jumped in with that nonsense.
One of her friends went even further, openly bringing up his and Anneliese’s divorce.
Zacharias‘ expression darkened instantly, and a cold, ominous light flashed across his eyes.
Derek and Marlowe looked startled.
“I beg your pardon?” Marlowe asked.
She had been so focused on preparing for the banquet that she hadn’t been keeping up with the gossip.
After multiple trips abroad and countless shopping sprees, she had only returned three days
and hadn’t heard a word about Zacharias‘ divorce.

He’d even brought up Anneliese over tea with Zacharias last time, yet the young man hadn’t said a word about it.
Zacharias quickly explained, “Mr. and Mrs. Golding, there’s been some sort of misunderstanding between us, but our feelings are still there. It’s all my fault, and I’m doing everything I can to win her back and save our marriage—”
Before he could finish, one of Selina’s friends cut in theatrically.
“Mr. Shaw, surely you know Ms. Claude has remarried? She wasted no time at all.”
“To drive the point home, she’s even brought her stepdaughter this evening. How could you hope to win her back now?” she quickly added.
Zacharias froze, his expression turning rigid as his gaze cut over with a sharp, murderous edge.
The woman paled and quickly ducked behind Selina.
Zacharias turned to glare at Selina, his eyes colder than she had ever seen.
Even Selina faltered, her fists clenching in unease.
She knew exactly what Zacharias was trying to do.
