“Anne, what’s so difficult about couples blending into each other’s social circles? You’re overthinking it. A husband should naturally support his wife’s social needs and make her feel cherished. From now on, don’t stress—just tell me what you need, alright?”
Jonathan’s breath brushed across her nose as he spoke.
He was so patient, so tender, that Anneliese felt lightheaded. Her heart fluttered wildly, as if it had a mind of its own.
She nodded without hesitation, her voice soft and sweet. “Okay.”
Jonathan finally lifted his gaze. When he saw her blushing, looking so gentle and obedient, his chest tightened. He reached out, unable to resist pinching her cheek, and added, “I don’t expect you to always give way to me. If you keep compromising, you’ll never earn respect or gratitude–more often than not, you’ll just be taken for granted. A wise woman knows how to guide her husband to put in effort. The more effort, the stronger the marriage.”
Anneliese remained silent.
She couldn’t help but think back to her failed marriage with Zacharias. Is Jonathan calling me foolish?
But honestly, the way he said it made him sound a little naive too.
And yet, this slightly clumsy sincerity only made her heart soften further. She felt like she was falling for him all over again.
Her hopelessly romantic side surged to the surface.
But this time, she refused to overthink.
Following her instincts, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Twice. Her breath was warm and sweet. “Is this what you mean?” she whispered.
Jonathan froze, a tingling sensation rushing through his chest like she had gripped his heart with both hands.
Perhaps he shouldn’t have tried guiding her–he was already willing to give her everything, even though they had only just begun.
He slid his hand to the back of her neck, ready to deepen the kiss, when suddenly a small head

popped up from behind the couch, staring with wide, round eyes.
“Ah!”
Anneliese jolted back, yelped, and shoved Jonathan away.

Meeting the innocent gaze of a little girl, her cheeks flamed. How could I forget we’re not alone?
The little girl covered her eyes with her pudgy hands, as if saying she hadn’t seen a thing.
“This is all your fault!”
Anneliese shot Jonathan a glare.
He stayed completely calm. Without a trace of embarrassment, he reached over, scooped the little girl up from behind the couch, and sat her between them. Then he turned to Anneliese.
“Why is Ellie with you?”
“She’s called Ellie? You know her?”
Anneliese blinked in surprise. No wonder she hadn’t resisted when Jonathan picked her up earlier.
“She’s India’s niece. You probably know her father, too–Steven Malone.”
Anneliese’s eyes widened. “Steven Malone? The Director of the Low–Altitude Economy Department under the National Air Traffic Control Committee.”
Because of her job, she kept track of policy and government updates. She’d seen him on TV more than once.
Young, handsome, and magnetic, Steven was practically the face of the National Air Traffic Control Committee. But she had only ever seen him through a screen.
“Yeah.”
Anneliese hadn’t expected the little girl she picked up by chance to come from such a prominent family.
Still, she only lingered on her surprise for a second before saying, “You should call her family. They must be worried sick.”
She realized she’d had Ellie with her for almost an hour.

Meanwhile, Anneliese pulled Ellie onto her lap and teased gently, “So your name is Ellie? That’s beautiful. Tell me, was it you who played with that lady’s dress earlier?”
Ellie’s big eyes flickered with panic. She dropped her gaze, lips sealed tight.
She looked as if she was afraid Anneliese would scold her or think badly of her.
But Anneliese could sense her unease, and instead of annoyance, she felt a quiet bond with the child.
There was no way she could see Ellie as bad.
She ruffled the girl’s hair with a smile. “You’re amazing, Ellie. You helped me get rid of the bad guys. I should be thanking you!”
Ellie’s face lit with a shy smile before she quickly looked down again.
It was the first smile Anneliese had seen from her all night, and it almost melted her heart.
Jonathan returned, lifting Ellie gently from her lap.
Her father’s sending someone to pick her up. I’ll take her down to the lobby.”
