Composing myself, I responded with polite restraint. “Mr. Xavier, you flatter me.”

Hugo casually shrugged off the hand on his shoulder, his movement smooth but deliberate. “I await your happy event.”
Felix laughed, the sound sending chills down my spine. Without another word, he walked toward the Steel Ascent and disappeared behind the closing doors.
Watching him leave, I breathed a small sigh of relief. But my expression remained serious as the full weight of his identity settled over me.
Hugo turned to look at me, his scholarly features creased with concern. “Are you frightened?”
I paused, considering my words carefully. “It’s okay… Luckily, you helped me out.”
Hugo’s expression shifted, regret flickering across his refined features. “I apologize for the events of yesterday.”
I was surprised by his sudden apology. “What are you apologizing for?”
“It was my idea to invite you here, but it caused you to suffer,” Hugo said, his voice sincere. “I didn’t consider things carefully enough.”
I looked at him, taking in his genuine concern and protective instincts. A small smile tugged at my lips.
“Professor Ashworth,” I said softly.
He looked at me expectantly, waiting for me to continue.
“Has anyone ever told you that you are cold on the outside but warm on the inside?”
“So?” Hugo asked, his tone curious.
I paused, then looked away, suddenly feeling self–conscious. “I… I was just making a
statement.”
“Didn’t you already know that?” Hugo’s tone was tinged with helplessness, as if he were revealing something obvious.
I lowered my head, my cheeks warming slightly. “Professor Ashworth, I know that you are a very good person…”

“Don’t rush to reject me,” Hugo said softly, interrupting my words.
My heart stopped. The gentle firmness in his voice made me look up at him in shock.

“I don’t need you to give me an answer right away, and I know your situation,” he continued. “I won’t make things difficult for you, and I won’t make you sever your mate bond with Marcus because of me.”
I stared at him, speechless.
“On the contrary, if you sever your bond because of me, I would think that my wrong.”

I felt my eyes widen, stunned by his words. My eyes must have betrayed my complete surprise as I stared at him, speechless.
“We have a lot of time, and no one knows what will happen in the future, so I don’t need your response now,” he said gently, his voice soft yet determined. “You just need to know my feelings. Even if you reject me in the future, I will accept it.”
“Professor Ashworth, actually you…” I began, but he interrupted me.
“Actually, I deserve someone better, right?” Hugo asked with a self–deprecating smile.
I couldn’t bring myself to answer. The words stuck in my throat.
Hugo laughed, but there was no bitterness in the sound. “Even the best person has to be someone I like, right?”
Hugo’s confession left me absentminded all afternoon. Despite knowing the possibility existed, it was still too sudden. My mind kept replaying his words, the gentle sincerity in his
voice.
“Why are you so distracted?” Celeste Harrison asked during our meeting, pulling me back to reality.
I forced a smile, trying to appear normal. “I’m thinking!”
Celeste looked suspicious, her eyes narrowing slightly. “I don’t believe you’re thinking about the meeting.”
She paused, glancing toward the window. “By the way, I saw Alpha Marcus’s car downstairs just now.”
I was stunned, my heart skipping a beat. The realization hit me like a physical blow.
I knew exactly why he was at the healing institute.
