Chapter 14 You Didn’t Protect Me
As soon as she heard the familiar voice, Juliette finally felt relieved. She lifted her head from the man’s embrace and saw the anger in his eyes. Perhaps, hidden beneath that anger, there was a trace of concern.
“It’s late at night, and you’re wandering around in the middle of the road. What the hell is going on in your head?” Max scolded her mercilessly.
“Are you okay?” Juliette looked him up and down.
“What a joke. What could possibly happen to me?” the man replied impatiently.
“As long as you’re fine… You hadn’t come home, and I thought my dad and the others might have given you trouble.” Juliette bit her lip. It seemed she had overreacted.
Max had plenty of things he wanted to reprimand her for, but when he saw that she hadn’t even bothered to put on a coat and was still wearing slippers, he swallowed his words. What an idiot! No wonder everyone thought they could push her around. He wasn’t exactly treating her well either, but she still looked at him like he was her savior.
“Let’s go home, Max said as he walked ahead.
Juliette nodded and followed behind him.
“I heard your grandfather left you twenty percent of Monroe Pharmaceutical’s shares before he passed?” Max asked casually.
“Yes, but they’re not mine anymore. Three years ago, without knowing it, I signed a share transfer agreement.”
“Not being able to claim them might not be a bad thing. If you don’t have absolute power, owning something that makes others envious will only bring trouble. You won’t be able to protect it, and you might even risk your life trying.” Max reminded her.
Juliette stared at his back. Not many people had ever spoken to her about things like this. For over 20 years, she had always had to learn these lessons the hard way, stumbling and falling through life.
“What? You weren’t listening again?” Max turned around to ask.
Juliette didn’t stop in time and walked straight into his firm chest..
“I heard you” she said in a muffled voice

Max glanced at her. Once they divorced, he would make sure she got back that 20 percent of Monroe Pharmaceutical’s shares as compensation.
The chaotic day finally ended.
The next morning, Juliette resumed her normal routine. When she left her room, Max had already gone to work. He had left her a note with his phone number for easy contact. Juliette put it away, bought a cup of soy milk and two buns from a breakfast stall, and headed to the
stone.
Generally, the store was busier at night–no one really bought adult products in the middle of the day. But this noon, an unexpected visitor entered.
“Hello, welcome.” As soon as she saw the guest’s face, Juliette’s smile froze. It was Gavin. Gavin stood in his impeccably tailored suit, his eyes filled with disdain and disgust for the store.
“When I first heard about this, I couldn’t believe it. Is this really how you’re degrading yourself, working in a place like this?” Gavin frowned, looking g at her.
He wasn’t sure what he felt. Juliette had betrayed him; he should hate her, should be eager to see her fall further. And yet, this was a woman he had once loved deeply. Seeing her go from the proud heiress of the Monroe family to a disgraced ex–convict working in an adult store, he felt a dull ache in his heart.
Juliette took a deep breath, straightened her back, and asked professionally, “Mr. Gavin, are you here to make a purchase? If you’re unsure what to buy, I can recommend something. This particular vibrator is a bestseller. Even if you can’t perform, it’ll still make your partner cry out in pleasure.”
As she spoke, she reached for the item to show him.
Juliette! Gavin shouted.
She lifted her gaze, her clear, cold eyes meeting his. “Mr. Gavin, if you’re here to shop, you’re welcome to stay. But if you’re here to cause trouble, please leave.”
She had nothing to feel ashamed about. So what if she worked here? She was making an honest living. She hadn’t stolen, robbed, or wronged anyone.
“You’ve really let yourself go, haven’t you? What happened to your pride and dignity?”
“I once offered you the position of Mrs. Sinclair, and you refused. Instead, you ran off with some lowlie What the hell was going through your mind? What were our 20 years of childhood relationship worth to you? And what does he have that I don’t?”

Gavin had been wanting to ask this question for years. He had lost, but he didn’t even know where he had gone wrong.
“You shouldn’t be asking me. You should be asking yourself. Why did you believe your fiancee’s sister over your own fiancee?”
“Because I saw it with my own eyes! I saw you locked in a room with that man for hours! I saw the marks on your body!” Gavin’s eyes were bloodshot. That night had been a nightmare for
him.
“That’s because you failed to protect me. You useless piece of trash! Get out! Juliette pointed at the door, her voice shaking with anger.
Her pride, her dignity? They had been ground to dust during those three years in prison. Compared to the injustice she had suffered, his pain was nothing. What right did he have to act like the victim?
Tll find the man from three years ago. And when I do, I’ll tear him apart limb by limb. That was the last thing Gavin said before leaving.
Juliette took a sip of water, trying to calm herself. She didn’t care how the man from three years ago died. If anything, she hoped he suffered as much as possible.
Outside Nigori Adult Store.
After Gavin drove away, Vivienne stepped out from the shadows, her face grim. An hour ago, she had gone to Sinclair Group, hoping to have lunch with Gavin. Instead, she was told that he was out on a private matter, and no one knew where he had gone.
Vivienne had tracked down Juliette’s job at an adult store. She had come just to check if her suspicions were correct, and to her horror, they were! Gavin had indeed come to see Juliette.
That filthy woman! Gavin is still thinking about her? Vivienne couldn’t help but wonder if Gavin had chosen this exact time to return to the country because Juliette had been released from prison. He had spent three years abroad without ev.
mentioning wanting to come back. But one month ago, out of nowhere, he had suddenly decided to return.
Hatred flared in Vivienne’s eyes.
She had stayed by Gavin’s side for three years, comforting him, traveling with him, and standing by him through everything. And yet, the most important place in his heart still
belonged to Juliette.
So what did that make her A mere replacement for an ex–convict? No. She refused to be put in a passive position

Pulling out her phone. Vivienne sent a message to a number, attaching a photo. “Make sure this woman learns her lesson.”
