29 Gavin Sinclair, You’re No Match for Him
Chapter 29 Gavin Sinclair, You’re No Match for Him
What a temper he’s got!
Juliette glanced at the glittering diamond ring in her hand.
Sure, it was obviously fake–but this was about as far as a straight man’s aesthetic could go.
It was the first gift Max had ever given me, after all. I couldn’t bring myself to throw it away.
Once we divorce someday, it’d still make a decent souvenir.

Knowing it wasn’t real helped her not feel too attached. Wearing a seven–carat diamond ring, she went right back to cooking and doing the dishes.
After dinner, she cleaned up a bag of trash from the kitchen and went downstairs to throw it
out.
The man on the couch was still tapping away at his tablet.
Sometimes Juliette found it odd–wasn’t he just a bodyguard? Why would a bodyguard need a computer?
Maybe I’d been locked up too long. The outside world had moved on without me.
But when she got downstairs, she saw a tall figure standing outside the building.
The man had sharply defined features and deep–set eyes. He was lifting his head slightly, staring right up at her apartment.
Gavin was gazing at the faint light on the seventh floor, jealousy and disappointment flickering in his eyes.
I didn’t understand how things between me and Juliette had come to this.
On lonely, quiet nights, I would sometimes imagine–if none of that had happened three years ago, would we already be married by now?
Maybe even have a child? A child who might look like me… or like her?
Either way, the kid would be beautiful.
But that was just a fantasy. The distance between us was only growing wider.

Juliette never imagined that even taking the trash out would be so unlucky–she actually ran into Gavin!
What was he doing here again?
Surely the mighty CEO of Sinclair Group wasn’t apartment–hunting in this neighborhood? Was the company about to go bankrupt?
If that were the case, I’d be the first to cheer.
Since they had nothing to do with each other anymore, she had no reason to avoid him.
So she walked out decisively, tossed the trash into the bin, and passed Gavin without so much as a glance.
Only to have her wrist grabbed by him.
“Gavin, what are you trying to pull now?”
Her tone was sharp, loaded with pure annoyance.
Gavin frowned. When had I become such an eyesore in her heart?
“1 million,” he said quietly.
“What?” Juliette had no idea what he meant. But the strong smell of alcohol told her he’d clearly had a lot to drink.
“Gavin, I’m telling you–if you’re going to be drunk and dramatic, take that nonsense to Vivienne. I’m sure she’d love to look after you. Me? Not interested.”
“Come back to me, and I’ll give you 1 million,” he said, eyes locked on hers.
Juliette could only laugh. Did I actually see… affection in his eyes?
“1 million? Is that supposed to be a dowry?” She scoffed.
“You’re thinking too much,” Gavin replied.
“With that filthy body of yours and your criminal record, there’s no way the Sinclair family would ever accept you as their daughter–in–law. But I can keep you as a mistress. I’ll give you everything–money, power, even affection—just not the title. As for the title of Mrs. Sinclair, that has to go to Vivienne. But she cares about you. I’m sure she’d treat you well,” Gavin added, thinking his arrangement was perfectly reasonable.

“Ha!” Juliette couldn’t help but laugh. Of course. When it came to insulting someone, Gavin really was unmatched.
“So I’m just a mistress, is that it?”
“Better than living here, isn’t it? This little birdcage–how big could it even be?” Gavin said.
Thwack!
Juliette slapped him hard, furious.
Damn my weak body. That slap should’ve ruptured his eardrum.
Gavin hadn’t been expecting it. His face turned sharply to the side, sobering him up a bit. Still, he didn’t think he’d said anything wrong.
“Gavin Sinclair, I, Juliette Monroe, will never be someone’s mistress. Never a side piece. And let me tell you this—no matter if you offered me a million or even your life to marry me, I would never say yes. I don’t want to spend the rest of my life staring at your disgusting face!”
Her words were resolute, not an ounce of hesitation.
Even a sliver of doubt would’ve been a betrayal of those three years I spent behind bars.
Just then, the elevator doors opened. A tall man stepped out with elegance and purpose.
Max had seen that Juliette had been gone for over ten minutes just to throw out the trash. Worried something had happened, he came down to check.
He didn’t expect to walk in on this scene between her and her ex–fiancé.
Both Juliette and Gavin turned at the sound of the elevator.
The next second, Gavin felt her hand slip from his grip. Juliette broke free like a bird that could never be caged and ran straight into Max’s arms.
That moment pierced Gavin like a dagger.
Max suddenly found a woman clinging tightly to his waist, so tight he couldn’t even push her
away.
Her scent, subtle gardenia, slowly filled his nose.
I usually hated the smell of perfume on women. But this one… wasn’t too bad.

“You rejected me… because of him?” Gavin pointed at Max. “What does he have that I don’t?”
I couldn’t accept being defeated by someone I considered weak.
Was this man richer than me? Was his family more powerful?
Juliette looped her arm through Max’s and said, “He shows up whenever I’m in danger. He speaks up for me when I’m being bullied. He believes I’m innocent. That I was framed.”
“Gavin, you’re no match for him.”
Her words hit Gavin straight in the soul like a heavy punch.
“Let’s go,” Juliette said, pulling Max toward the elevator.
Inside, silence settled. Max couldn’t help the faint smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. He was in a very good mood.
But it didn’t last long. I remembered why I had come to Newton in the first place.
The path I was walking was full of danger and thorns. Our marriage was never meant to last.
“You’re not actually falling for me, are you?” He asked, testing her reaction.
Before Juliette could answer, he added, “I’ll say it now–don’t fall in love with me. It won’t end well.”
“Please. Didn’t you notice? I was putting on a show for Gavin. I know we’ll be divorced in six months, tops. Relax. I’m not about to throw my dignity away by chasing after you.”
“Mm. Good to know you’re self–aware.” Max said.
She was being so sensible–I should’ve been even more pleased. But somehow, that earlier joy had vanished completely?
After leaving Janover Condo, Gavin passed out drunk by the side of the road.
A kind stranger used facial recognition to unlock his phone and called his most recent contact.
Vivienne couldn’t believe it when she got the call.
Gavin was always so composed, so concerned about appearances. How could he possibly be passed out on
the street?
But the number was definitely his.

By the time she arrived, over twenty minutes had passed.

The kind stranger had stayed with Gavin the whole time. Seeing someone come to pick him up, he said, “This guy must’ve had his heart broken. Kept mumbling Jules, Jules‘ the whole time.”
