His clear preference for me made me feel really secure.
After I agreed to be with him, he wanted to go public about our relationship a few times, but I held him back.
His status as the heir to a well–known New York family was just too
much attention.
And being a public figure myself, I didn’t want my private life in the spotlight either.
Thinking about how he had cared for me all this time made me smile.
He came over and asked, “What’s got you smiling so happily?”
I took the watermelon from his hand and bit into it, feeling completely. satisfied.
Just when I was lost in those memories, my dad called.
He said that Maria Hachett of the Hachett family was celebrating her 80th birthday and told us younger folks to come back for the celebration. He even specifically warned me not to embarrass him.
I had a ton of reasons not to go back.
But I remembered that when the mistress and her daughter were bullying me, it was mostly Maria who stepped in to help.
So, I decided to make the trip anyway.
Nicholas offered to come with me, but I didn’t want him to witness my

messy family, so I turned him down.
Plus, I wasn’t the soft pushover anymore who’d just cry when getting picked on.
No matter what happened, I felt like I could handle it this time.

After years apart, Victoria Hachett and her mom were still wary about my arrival.
Every word dripped with mockery–about my child out of wedlock, about me shaming the Hachett name.
My dad just sat there without saying a word, letting his illegitimate daughter insult me like it was nothing.
Once upon a time, I was the little princess he cherished and adored.
But ever since my mom passed away, he brought that other woman and her daughter into our home and completely stopped caring about me.
The first time I met Victoria, we ended up in a fight right in front of him.
I didn’t stand a chance. She left some nasty scratch marks on my face.
And she knew how to play the victim really well, so in the end, I was the only one who got scolded.
Back in the day, whenever I felt down, Jackson would sit next to me and hand me tissues.
But this time, his eyes were glued to Victoria.
Not only did he not comfort me at all, but the very next day, he went off to celebrate that illegitimate daughter’s birthday.

everything with these super fond looks in their eyes.
But it had only been less than a week since my mom passed away.
I was devastated and just slammed her birthday cake onto the ground in frustration.
The guests were shocked, and my dad actually slapped me right there in front of everyone.
I covered my face and yelled at him for being so shameless–this guy who came from nothing, used my mom’s money, and still had the nerve to say he built his life all on his own while keeping a mistress.
Everyone gasped at that, but Jackson was the first one to freak out.
He pulled me aside and told me to stop acting crazy.
He told me bluntly that the dead don’t return, that my dad had the right to move on, and that I shouldn’t take it out on “innocent” people.
I watched as he carefully pulled Victoria out from the mess of cake, looking all concerned while he straightened her dress.
I suddenly felt like it was all pointless. “If that’s how you feel, let’s just break up.”
The crowd started murmuring again. My dad told me to shut up and stop making a fool of myself.
I turned around to face him. “Am I the one embarrassing myself? Shouldn’t you be the one feeling embarrassed?”
He pointed at me and yelled that if I walked out of this house, I should never come back.
I shot back, “If you don’t want me to come back, then so be it.”

That day, Jackson didn’t even try to catch up to me.
After blocking him on WhatsApp, I sat by the side of the road and cried for two hours.
As memories flooded back, I realized Victoria almost looked pitiful.
After all these years, she still saw me as her competition in her mind.
What a pity, I stopped caring for the guy that she treated like gold.
