Chapter 6
After all these years, that once fiery young guy had really matured.
But he still looked just as good, and his voice was still clear and crisp.
I took a deep breath and said, “Long time no see.”
Matthew’s face got a bit stiff, and he paused before saying, “Maddie, I never wanted to break up with you back then.”
But what did that even matter?
I stopped loving you ages ago–like when you ditched me in Paris for your fiancée.
The first time I met Matthew was on the night I cut ties with the Hachett family.
Having just broken up with Jackson, I was sitting by the side of the road crying for two hours.
Just when I thought I’d cry some more, a motorcycle zoomed past out of
nowhere.
My phone slipped from my hand and fell onto the ground. He sped by on his bike, and it got smashed into pieces.
I stood by the side of the road and cried even harder.
He said he was sorry, but when he saw me all teary–eyed and a total mess, it finally hit him that something was off.
He thought I was upset because my phone got broken, but that wasn’t it at

all.

He took me to get a new phone and drove me around town.
The wind whipped against my face, and for the first time, I truly felt what freedom was like.
Later that night, he even brought me to an arcade, invited two girls to join us, and we spent the whole night gaming together.
The next day, Matthew woke me up by tapping my shoulder at the game table.
When I checked my phone, I saw myself as the headline on the entertainment news. “Popular Actress Suspected of Messing with A–list Celebrity’s Relationship”
Right after it were the names “Victoria and Jackson“.
After living a pretty straight–laced life for 18 years, my rebellious side totally peaked in that moment.
Matthew joked that it was no wonder I looked familiar to him. It turned out that I was a popular celebrity.
He asked if I wanted to join him in France for a race.
Maybe it was my lust messing with my head, but I just nodded without thinking twice.
While I was away for 24 hours, Jackson bombarded me with calls.
My biased, terrible dad even threatened me, saying I’d better not come back.
If I did, he’d break my legs so I’d never be able to go out again.

What a joke–he didn’t need to break my legs, life did it for him. I ended up in a car accident while racing with Matthew in France.
He came out fine, but I ended up with a broken leg.
After spending a week in the hospital, I saw the news that he had gotten engaged to his fiancée.
When I saw his face on TV, I couldn’t help but laugh bitterly.
If I couldn’t trust my childhood friend of over ten years, how could I count on a guy I’d only met for a few days?
It wasn’t until later that I realized just how naive I’d been.
I promised myself never to look for security in a man again, for the third time.
I broke up with Matthew. Once back home, I cut out all the drama and threw myself into working with the film crew.
Somehow, I ended up stranded on a deserted island.
The place was barren, and those wild waves were crashing against the shore.
As my thoughts drifted off, Matthew popped back into my head once
more.
He asked me, “I still like you. Will you divorce him?”
