Chapter 10
I turned my head away and just ignored him.
Before he could snap out of his daze, a bunch of people rushed in from outside.
Richard was pinned down to the ground.
It didn’t take long for him to suggest a truce and even promise not to bother me again.
Looking at his cold expression, Nicholas let out a little sneer, “You’d better keep your word. If not, I’ve got ways to take you on directly.”
Richard had nothing to say but didn’t dare speak up. He looked like he had finally met someone who could stand up to him this time.
After getting back to New York, I couldn’t get myself together for ages while staying at home.
Nicholas put all his work on hold just to be with me and even said it was time we made our relationship official.
“What if those three ex–boyfriends of yours don’t give up and come after you again?
“I don’t have that confidence that I can win every time.”
I rolled my eyes at him, but then I realized he had a point.
He wrapped his arms around me, his face full of tenderness. “But hey, it’s not your fault either. Who could resist your charm?”

His words made me laugh.
Just when I agreed to make our relationship official, a friend request popped up on my phone. I took a closer look and saw it was from Matthew.

Nicholas let out a cold chuckle and said he’d take me home to meet his family that night, plus let the younger ones get to know their sister–in–law.
Suddenly, I felt a bit nervous. Even though we’d been married for half a year now, I hadn’t met any of his family yet!
I was about to get up and change into something nice while picking out some gifts when Nicholas stopped me, saying that he had already picked the gifts out himself.
After changing clothes, Nicholas drove us over to his family’s mansion.
Noticing how anxious I was feeling, he tried to comfort me. “If you’re not comfortable at the adults‘ table, you can just hang out with my cousins instead.”
I pursed my lips, totally at a loss for words.
No matter how awkward I felt around older folks, there was no could sit at the kids‘ table on my first visit to their place.
I didn’t say anything. I just rolled my eyes at him.

Only when we stepped inside and saw Matthew busy with the kids did it hit me–he’d been teasing me.
The warm, lively vibe came to an instant stop as soon as Matthew caught sight of my face.
Nicholas stood off to the side, looking all serious as he asked Matthew why he didn’t greet me.

That’s when Matthew straightened up a bit, leaned forward slightly, and forced out my name.
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed his smile looked more bitter than anything else.
A wave of speechlessness washed over me. If I had known this would happen, why did I even bother sending Nicholas away earlier?
Wouldn’t it have been way more fun to let these two “brothers” chat face- to–face?
The thought made me stifle a laugh.
Probably scared his cousin would give him a hard time, Matthew didn’t dare say a single word to me alone during the whole meal.
wasn’t until after dinner, when everyone had headed off to bed, that he quietly called me into his study. His face flushed red as he apologized.
Then, he even started complaining, asking why I hadn’t mentioned that my marriage partner was actually his oldest cousin.
Seeing him look so annoyed but too scared to say anything about it made me laugh inside.
I put on a serious expression and asked, “Didn’t you say you liked me? So now you’re not going to go for it anymore? Are you really that scared of Nicholas?”
As soon as I said that, Matthew jumped in to defend himself. “I’m not scared of him. I just…”
I pressed him on purpose. “Just what?”
Matthew didn’t really answer my question. He just looked confused about why I’d want to be with someone as boring as his cousin.

Seeing his serious face, I couldn’t help but laugh. “What if I divorced Nicholas and married you instead?”
I would’ve never joked like that with him before, but now…
This little race car driver was totally in my reach!

Sure enough, the moment those words came out of my mouth, he jumped back like he’d seen a ghost.
He even begged me not to say stuff like that again. If Nicholas heard it, it would seriously be the end of him.
Watching him run off, flustered and panicked, I let out a deep breath.
I thought, “See? Everyone says they love you, but what they really love is just themselves.
“But honestly, it doesn’t matter. Having Nicholas is more than enough for
me.”
After getting back from the Talbott’s mansion, I jumped on Twitter and shared my wedding photos along with some shots of Nicholas and me.
Out of all my contacts, I tagged the official account of the CEO of the Talbott Group.
And just like that, the internet went wild.
“OMG! Madeline actually married the CEO of the Talbott Group!”
“This is amazing! Total perfection!”
“Hmph! Let’s see who dares to talk trash about Madeline now. Her baby’s daddy is obviously super impressive!”
“That’s right!”

Of course, along with all the blessings, there were also some nasty rumors floating around.
But honestly, none of that had mattered anymore. Right then, what had really counted was that I was happy.
While I was replying to my friends‘ comments, Nicholas chimed in, “Honey, you’ve been working hard. I’ll whip up some soup for you when you get home.”
True to his title as the “Mr. Perfect Boyfriend,” he didn’t hold back and tagged all three of my ex–boyfriends with a message for each.
“No decent guy goes back to what he left behind. Don’t come bothering my wife again.”
Jackson, the big–time actor, stayed quiet.
Richard, the mafia leader, just replied with a bunch of ellipses.
Matthew, the top racer, shot back. “I’ve been on my best behavior. Can you let me off this time?”
Seeing how well–behaved they all were made me send Nicholas a kiss emoji through the screen.
He quickly called me on video. His voice was sweet and gentle. “You’re pregnant. Don’t tease me like that.”
“I’m speechless,” I said.
