Anneliese had run out of words. Gratitude felt useless now—she had already whispered it so many times that even she was sick of hearing herself say it.
Jonathan always seemed to show up right when she was about to crack, as if the universe was sending him to catch her whenever she fell.
He looked at her briefly before lowering his eyes again. He continued to wipe her right hand with quiet patience.
Flecks of Melody and Lenora’s blood stained her porcelain skin, stark against her pale fingers.
He cleaned each mark with precision, passing the soiled tissue to Zion once he was satisfied. Then he clasped her trembling hand gently and asked, “So, what do you see?”
Her eyes tracked his. Their hands intertwined, the matching herringbone rings on their ring fingers gleaming under the hospital lights.
Her breath hitched. The meaning struck her. Her answer came out as a fragile whisper. “Wedding rings…”
Jonathan nodded slightly. “So, do you want me to remind you what we are?”
She shook her head quickly. Only then did he entwine their fingers and murmur, “Your grandma is mine too. Protecting her is my duty. One more ‘thank you‘ and I’ll start charging you for the favor.”
Every thank–you cut him. To him, it was her way of keeping distance, of holding herself ready to push him away at any time.
An ache spread through her chest, bitter and sweet all at once. She lowered her head in silence. “Zacharias, tell the police what happened!” Melody’s shrill cry shattered the air.
“My son is the CEO of Clauderias Tech. How can you take one side of the story? I didn’t kill anyone–I’m not going anywhere!”
She was dragged forward by the officers, kicking and screaming. The memory of being hauled off for provoking Jameson to assault Anneliese still burned in her mind, and she couldn’t go through that again.
Lenora broke down in sobs, spinning around every few steps as she begged her brother to save her.

Zacharias was blindsided, but unlike his mother and sister, he had his wits. He knew the deciding factor was Anneliese’s stance. If she forgave them, everything could still be smoothed
over.
He rushed toward her. “Anne, I know you’re worried about your grandma, but my mom and Lenora wouldn’t intentionally harm her. This isn’t something that needs police-”
Jonathan’s eyes
shot up, cold and sharp, silencing him on the spot.
Zion stepped forward immediately, ready to deal with him.
Just as Zion was about to move, Anneliese yanked her hand out of Jonathan’s grasp, leapt to her feet, and swung. Her palm landed square across Zacharias‘ cheek.
The sound cracked through the hall like a whip. His head whipped around, and blood seeped into the corner of his mouth.
His chest burned with humiliation, disbelief, and raw pain. He gazed back at Anneliese, stunned, only to be swallowed by the fiery glare in her eyes. Her hatred radiated from her in waves, scorching hot.
For a moment, his heart tightened like it was being crushed in a fist.
“How did your mom and sister know my grandma was here?” Anneliese asked. “You told them, didn’t you?”
She was right. Melody and Lenora had no idea her grandmother had been transferred to Oceaton. Zacharias had deliberately kept her away from family matters, knowing exactly how vicious his mother and sister could be.
He hadn’t breathed a word. That left only one explanation.
His breaths turned ragged as memory struck. Selina. She was here at the hospital the other day… I told her. D*mn it, it was her.
His fists tightened. His voice rasped. “It wasn’t me,
I-”
Anneliese’s voice cut like ice. “I will never forgive you. Stop talking. The cops should take you in, too.”
Zane nodded firmly. “If Mr. Shaw is the one who leaked the information, he needs to be investigated. The squad car hasn’t left yet. I’ll call them back.”
He lifted his phone to dial.

Zacharias‘ face drained of color. Sh*t… Mom and Lenora are loose cannons. One wrong word and they’ll screw everything up. If I get pulled in too, I’m done for.
I need to get them a lawyer fast, shut them up before they spill. I’ve already got enough mess on my plate- getting hauled in for questioning isn’t an option.
He bent over, struggling to get the words out. “It wasn’t me, Anne. You can doubt me all you like, but I want to apologize to you and Grandma on their behalf.”
It was a desperate bow, pride swallowed whole.
