When Anneliese returned to the White family, Melanie and Timothy would occasionally plaster on polite smiles and offer a few cordial words.
But Perseus and Christopher–the two brothers–acknowledged only Selina as their sister.
It had taken Anneliese considerable effort to get even the slightest tolerance from them.
Yet, even then, their behavior toward her was suffused with superiority–cold, dismissive, every word laced with condescension, as if speaking to her were an act of charity.
So, hearing one of them actually ask for something, and with a trace of entreaty in their voice, was unprecedented.
“Well, well, listen to yourself–the illustrious Mr. Perseus finally knows how to humble himself and ask for a favor?” Anneliese snapped, letting her sarcasm ring freely.
She could practically hear Perseus grinding his teeth, fury radiating from him.
She waited for his retaliation, and sure enough, his voice turned icily sharp.
“Anneliese, don’t push your luck!”
A cold laugh escaped her lips. “Oh, really? I’ve already disappeared from the White family, just like you all wanted. What more could you possibly want from me? If anyone should back off, it’s you.”
Without granting them a response, she ended the call.
Gripping her phone tightly, her brow creased into a frown. That conversation had clearly struck a nerve.
She knew perfectly well that the White family hadn’t suddenly developed a sense of gratitude
or remorse.
Their reputation for coldness and selfishness made that obvious.
Most likely, their behavior stemmed from Jonathan’s public acknowledgment of her as Mrs. Fullbuster at the Golding Family banquet.
Meanwhile, the White family was in crisis–their finances had dried up, and panic had set in.

Now, they hoped to cajole her into bailing them out. Nothing more.
“Are you upset?”
Jonathan’s deep, soothing voice came from beside her.

Anneliese glanced at him, but the memory of the phone call’s tension flashed through her mind. Her gaze instinctively fell.
He seemed calm now, though she doubted he could maintain that composure without it affecting him.
Lost in thought, she felt his fingers gently lift her chin.
“What are you staring at?”
When her eyes met his narrowed, almost dangerous gaze, Anneliese flickered nervously.
“Nothing! I swear!” she hurriedly protested.
Jonathan gave her a pointed, warning squeeze on her chin before letting go.
Anneliese hesitated. “Well, you heard all that just now, right? Do you think I’m being… too cold–hearted?”
The car was quiet, though the White family had been noisy over the phone. Jonathan had certainly caught fragments of the conversation.
Her birth mother, Melanie, now hospitalized, had pleaded for her visit. By anyone’s standards, ignoring her might appear heartless.
She worried Jonathan might think the same.
He observed her anxiety and raised an eyebrow. She opened her mouth, ready to explain how greedy the White family was and how she refused to be manipulated into draining Jonathan’s resources–but he spoke first.
“If you don’t want to acknowledge them, then don’t. From now on, I’ll be your family.”
Those simple words struck her in the chest. A warmth spread through her body, and her nose tingled as emotion surged.
Her eyes met his, wide and glistening.
At that moment, Jonathan’s phone buzzed. He glanced down, saw the caller, and gestured to

her.
“It’s Grandma. Probably reminding us to visit.”
Before his business trip, he had promised his grandma that he would bring Anneliese to see her. They had been home for a few days, but the visit had been postponed because her grandma required emergency surgery.
“Go ahead, answer,” Anneliese said quickly. “I can go
with
you
tomorrow.”
Jonathan picked up. After a few words, he said, “Yeah, she’s right here with me.”
Anneliese assumed he meant her, and indeed, he handed her the phone.
“Grandma wants to talk to you.”
Anneliese lifted the receiver. “Good evening, Penelope.”
Penelope’s warm voice flowed through. “Anne, you’ve had a tough day, haven’t you?”
Anneliese glanced at Jonathan and whispered, “Did you tell Penelope about my grandma?”
Jonathan nodded. She replied, “Well… Jonathan’s been with me the whole time. My grandma’s out of danger now, so I’m fine. So don’t worry about me, Penelope.”
“That’s good to hear. You two probably haven’t eaten properly all day, right? I had the staff prepare some late–night snacks. Why don’t you and Jonathan come over now?”
