“Grandma, this…” Anneliese hesitated, cradling a stack of gifts in her arms, utterly flustered.
Penelope simply smiled and patted her hand again.
“Don’t worry about it. They’re all my old friends. When they heard I finally had such a sweet granddaughter–in–law, they thought I was exaggerating and had to come see for themselves.
“Now that they’ve seen the truth, there’s no denying it. Just keep the gifts, dear. You must be starving–let’s eat first.”
She steered Anneliese toward the dining room, her warmth so disarming that there wasn’t a single moment for awkwardness to take hold.
Meanwhile, Jonathan sat quietly, a large purple bruise marring his handsome face, yet nobody seemed to notice.
Anneliese couldn’t help sneaking a glance at him, her expression tinged with disbelief. Really? Is Jonathan that unpopular now?
Now that they were married, Penelope treated her like a treasure of national significance.
In the dining room, Penelope had gone all out. The table was brimming with dishes–not massive portions, but each looked sophisticated and nourishing.
Even the edible bird’s nest soup came in multiple flavors–brown sugar, coconut milk, snow pear, and red dates with berries.
“Anne, you’ve been working so hard taking care of your grandma lately. You look thinner than the last time I saw you. You need to eat and regain your strength.”
Penelope’s gaze was filled with genuine concern, but then she turned sharply toward Jonathan.
“You brought home a wife to care for her, not to watch her struggle! Right after the wedding, you go off on a business trip. Anne’s grandma had surgery, and you weren’t there. Poor Anne had to manage everything on her own!”
“That’s not right, Grandma. He got the best doctor and the finest hospital room. He stayed by my side the whole time outside the operating room. He’s been nothing but supportive…”
Anneliese glanced at Jonathan, who simply sat quietly, drying his hands with a warm towel as Penelope lectured him, not offering a single defense.

Penelope’s expression softened into a wide, amused smile as she looked from Anneliese to Jonathan.
“I see. Anne, seeing you so concerned about him, it looks like he finally has someone who’ll stand up for him.”
“Grandma, no–it’s not like that!” Anneliese’s cheeks flamed under Penelope’s teasing grin. She was only speaking the truth!
Penelope patted her hand once more. “Eat up, both of you. I’m going to rest for a bit.”
With a cheerful wave, she left, and only then did Anneliese turn toward Jonathan.
He raised an eyebrow. “See? You believe me now?”
Anneliese realized, with a small, relieved smile, that this was exactly what he had meant when he told her to relax.
Jonathan sighed. “I’m the one who should be nervous.”
“What?”
She followed his gaze and froze. His side of the table was laden with at least a dozen dishes, entirely different from hers.
There was oyster stew, grilled steak, garlic butter shrimp, braised lamb, and clams with pasta. Wait a second. If I’m not mistaken, all of these are considered dishes that boost a man’s virility.
Anneliese’s mind flashed back to how she had been straddling his lap in the car earlier, and her cheeks burned hotter.
Just how wrong are Penelope’s assumptions about Jonathan?
Jonathan raised his fork, ready to dig in, when Anneliese, acting on impulse, grabbed his hand. “You’re not seriously going to eat all of this, are you? You don’t need it.”
Since they were staying at Penelope’s house, it was certain they would be sleeping together that night. If he went through all of this food, she couldn’t even begin to imagine the consequences!
He looked at her, genuinely puzzled. “Why not? I’m hungry.”

Anneliese blinked. Does he really not know what these dishes are for?

She studied him for a few seconds, checks burning. He seemed genuinely baffled, even trying to pull his hand free, as if he were just hungry and impatient to eat.
“Is something wrong with these dishes?” he asked, one eyebrow raised.
Anneliese felt her face heat up. How can I explain that these are male vitality foods? It’s beyond embarrassing.
Thinking quickly, she held onto his hand. “I just think eating this so late might be too heavy- it could be hard to digest and disturb your sleep. Something lighter would be better.”
Jonathan shrugged. “No worries. I have a strong stomach, and I’ve still got work tonight.”
With that, he gently freed his hand, sampled the braised lamb, and then helped himself to a bowl of oyster stew, looking like he was about to feast like a king.
