Zacharias strode up the stairs, while Selina froze on the couch, her face shifting between pale and flushed, breaking the cotton swab in her hand in sheer frustration.
When she first encountered Zacharias, he had been just another penniless guy she barely noticed. Her affections had always been reserved for Jonathan–the golden boy everyone admired.
But now Jonathan was blind to her entirely. He would sooner pursue Anneliese, the infamous divorced woman, than even acknowledge Selina’s presence.
After repeatedly hitting dead ends with Jonathan–and with Zacharias slipping beyond her influence–Selina resolved to claim Zacharias for herself, determined to have him utterly captivated.
She had assumed that Zacharias, having already taken someone like Coral as a mere stand–in, would be easily swayed by her–certainly, he would be utterly captivated by her without a second thought.
Yet Selina never anticipated the outcome. He actually refused her.
D*mn it!
The mortification was unbearable, and her jealousy toward Anneliese surged like wildfire.
“Ouch…”
Elsewhere in town, a Maybach rested at the curb. Inside, a man reclined against the leather seat as a woman gently dabbed medicine on his bruised face. He inhaled sharply.
“Did I hurt you?”
Anneliese’s eyes glistened, her big gaze anxious as she held the disinfectant swab. She puckered her lips and blew softly over Jonathan’s wound.
A shiver ran down his neck, coursing through his entire body. His Adam’s apple bobbed as he caught her wrist.
“That’s enough. Just apply some ointment,” he muttered, his voice husky.
His bruises were hardly serious, yet her delicate, almost ethereal touch had nearly undone

him.
Who on earth teaches her to treat wounds like this? It’s unbearably seductive!
Jonathan reached for the cotton swab in her hand, but she snatched it away.

“No! We have to take care of this properly, or your grandma will definitely worry if she sees you like this.”
Her concern was understandable, but Jonathan had only been struck by Zacharias because of her.
If Penelope fretted over her grandson and took it out on Anneliese, it would be a disaster.
“Don’t move,” she warned, puffing out her cheeks and narrowing her eyes.
Sighing, Jonathan leaned back, allowing his wife to fuss over him. She dabbed ointment on the bruises, massaged it in, and even blew on them again, finally nodding in satisfaction.
“That’s sufficient for now. Apply more after your shower tonight. By tomorrow, the swelling should subside, though the bruises will linger. I got this from the pharmacy.”
She triumphantly brandished a sleek black mask, waving it as if she’d uncovered a treasure.
“Mrs. Fullbuster, you’re so thoughtful,” Jonathan said, raising an eyebrow and playfully tapping her nose.
Flustered, Anneliese quickly packed her things and rolled down the window to summon Zion, who waited outside, ready to drive.
The car glided into the villa’s courtyard, halting beside the ornate fountain. Jonathan held her hand as they walked inside the living room, only to be intercepted by Penelope, who couldn’t wait to greet them herself.
“Anne, I’ve been dying to see you! Everyone, meet my sweet granddaughter–in–law. Isn’t she lovely?”
Penelope grasped Anneliese’s hand, lifting her chin proudly for the assembled crowd.
Anneliese nearly jumped. On the way over, Jonathan had clearly said that all his other relatives lived in Halden, and only Penelope resided here.
Yet before her stood five, six, seven, eight elderly ladies and gentlemen, and she had no idea what was going on.

Before she could speak, the elders‘ gazes zeroed in on her, followed by a chorus of voices.
“She’s stunning! Congratulations, Penelope. A granddaughter–in–law like her is a blessing.” “She’s youthful, intelligent, and kind. No wonder you couldn’t wait to show her off!”
“Jonathan and she are perfect together. Hopefully they’ll have a child next year–my twin great–grandsons need a playmate!”
“Oh my, their child is going to be adorable. Keep it up, you two!”
Anneliese was inundated with praise, dazed, her cheeks burning with embarrassment.
Sensing her discomfort, Jonathan drew her close.
Penelope waved her hand. “Alright, that’s enough. You’ve met my lovely granddaughter–in–law. Now, you should head home–Anne is still hungry!”
Before Anneliese could respond, her arms were suddenly filled with gifts.
She barely had time to react, let alone thank anyone, as the elders vanished as swiftly as they had appeared.
