Jonathan ended the call without another word, tossing his phone aside.

On the other end, Elizabeth slammed her own phone down on the table, her expression dark with displeasure.
Soon, night fell.
When Anneliese entered the private room of the club with Jonathan, Joel and the others were already there.
Jessica had come with Zane, and being the social butterfly she was, she had already gotten along well with Carter and Joel.
The four of them were gathered around a table playing card games.
As soon as she saw Anneliese and Jonathan walk in, Jessica pushed her cards away, leapt to her feet as though she’d been pardoned, and rushed straight toward Anneliese.
“I’m tapping out. We need to catch
up, Anne!”
Seeing her coming, Anneliese instinctively opened her arms for a hug.
But before Jessica could reach her, Jonathan casually hooked an arm around Anneliese’s waist and steered her aside.
Jessica’s hug fell short, and she nearly crashed headfirst into the door.
“It’s warm here. Why don’t you take off your jacket first?”
Jessica spun around in disbelief, just in time to see Jonathan bending down and whispering to Anneliese.
It was as if that little move of pulling her away had been nothing more than a coincidence.
But the man’s possessiveness was practically radiating off him like a shield.
How could Jessica not notice?
She rolled her eyes, thinking to herself, With this level of jealousy, is he going to get jealous of his own child when Anne has a baby?

Anneliese slipped off her coat, and Jonathan took it from her, hanging it up alongside his own.
Across the room, Joel and the others exchanged looks.
Joel lifted his glass for a sip, then leaned toward Carter and muttered, “It’s only been a while since I last saw Jonathan. When did he become such a simp?”
His sudden change in demeanor was unnerving.
Having seen the couple frequently while treating Jessica’s grandmother, Carter remained composed.
He nodded at Joel. “Relax, you haven’t even seen the worst of it yet.”
He still remembered that morning outside the hospital.
Jonathan stood at his car window, deliberately showing off his tie, his wedding ring, and even his watch.
So much so that when Carter later answered a call about a blind date his family had arranged for him, he was so rattled by Jonathan’s smugness that he dazedly agreed to it.
Jonathan was downright toxic!
Noticing how uncharacteristically quiet Zane was, Joel and Carter both turned to look at him.
“Cat got your tongue?”
Among the four of them, Zane usually looked the coldest and hardest to mess with–but ironically, he was also the chattiest.
Today, though, he was acting strangely.
When prompted, Zane swirled his glass, flashing a toothy grin.
“Don’t you think it’s great? Oh, how romantic! I’d kill to have a taste of it too.”
Joel and Carter were speechless.
Jonathan’s lovesick disease had found another victim.
Meanwhile, Anneliese nodded at Joel and the others, then leaned toward Jessica.
“You didn’t run into trouble back in Baytree, did you?” she asked.

She worried that Jessica might have encountered Marcus or other members of the Johnson family.
If it weren’t for the earlier matter with her grandmother, Anneliese would have been furious.
Jessica insisted on going with Zane as well, or Anneliese would never have let her return to Baytree otherwise.
Jessica’s eyes flickered slightly, and she instinctively glanced toward Zane.
Baytree was Marcus‘ territory.
Soon after they landed, they had already noticed suspicious tailing.
For her safety, Zane insisted that she stay within his sight at all times.
Unexpectedly, he produced a pair of handcuffs and locked their hands together.
For two days, they remained handcuffed except during bathroom breaks.
They had even slept that way, and Anneliese’s question brought back the dull ache of her half- numb limbs and feeling like a conjoined twin.
Jessica subtly tried to look away, but Zane’s gaze happened to meet hers.
As they made eye contact, the man took a large sip of red wine, his Adam’s apple bobbing and eyes half–lidded, radiating full sexual tension.
Jessica quickly looked away.
“Yeah, it went well. Don’t worry, alright? I don’t want Jonathan to get jealous. Can’t get too close to you next time!”
Anneliese slapped her shoulder playfully.
“What are you talking about? He’s mature and steady. Everything he does has a reason, and there’s no way he’d act so absurdly.”
