Anneliese grabbed the glass of water from Nishay.

“Anne, Zion is truly a good one. He’s sincere and warm. He said his boss is very young, too. He must be outstanding as well to pick an assistant like him. How old is your friend? He’s a man, isn’t he? Look at the number of gifts he sent. It’s too nice of him. We should treat him to a meal when I get discharged. When are you free?”
“Grandma, we’re not that close.” Anneliese placed the cup down with a small smile.
“Huh? Really? Doesn’t seem like it,” Nishay found it hard to believe her.
Anneliese just smiled and tucked the blanket around her. “Big bosses like to be thorough and courteous. That’s all.”
Nishay pondered on it and agreed. If he really cares about Anne, he’d make the effort to come personally rather than send an assistant.
Her thoughts drifted to how Zacharias had changed for the worse once he became a big boss, and her interest immediately waned. So she dismissed the mysterious friend of Anneliese’s. At the moment, Carter was still her favorite candidate.
It was the first day that Nishay was moved to a regular ward, so Anneliese spent the whole day at the hospital with her. She had wanted to stay the night, but Nishay insisted the night nurse was more professional and sent her home.
It was already nightfall by the time Anneliese drove back to Maple Bay. She slowed the car as she neared the neighborhood when a shadow suddenly lunged out of nowhere. Startled, she stomped on the brakes and almost hit her head on the steering wheel.
Irritated, she looked up to see an exasperated Selina standing there.
As their gazes met, Selina slammed on the hood twice, signaling for Annelise to get out. But Anneliese merely frowned and honked three times.
“Argh!” The blaring horn made Selina clutch her ears. She glared furiously but refused to
move.
With her acting like this, Anneliese was even more unwilling to step out. There was no saying what madness Selina was up to.
Anneliese wanted to honk again, determined to see who would give in first. Just then, a horn sounded from behind her.

Worried that she was blocking the way, she turned to look only to see a tall guy getting out of the car behind her.
It was Jonathan. Anneliese’s worries cased as she watched him stride toward her. She undid her seatbelt and opened her car door as he reached her side.
With one hand pressing against the half–opened car door, he rested his other hand gently on her shoulders as he leaned down and said, “Don’t get out. I’ll handle this.”
Then he guided her back into her seat with gentle pressure and shut the door for her.
Anneliese decided to stay in the car as she watched Jonathan approach Selina.
As expected, Selina’s identity was exposed after Mikita was taken into custody. So Selina must be feeling cornered and desperate. Naturally, she loathed Anneliese too.
Jonathan was also worried Selina might lose it and harm Anneliese.
Selina felt like a blade had cut through her heart as she watched Jonathan ever so gently settle Anneliese back into the car, but looked at her with a somber expression the moment he turned around.
Her eyes were bloodshot with a crystalline tear clinging to the corner of her headlights reflected on it.

“Mr. Fullbuster, I’ve lost everything. I’m reduced to shambles. I just want to ask Anne for mercy. That she can spare my mom. You really didn’t need to treat me like some beast.” Her laugh was satirical and a little bitter. Her shadow stretched long and thin under the harsh light.
Jonathan stopped a mere two steps away. His gaze was icy and merciless. “Your mom showed her no mercy back then. Four years ago, you didn’t either. So what right do you have to beg for mercy now? Move out of the way!”
A chill coursed through Selina’s body, and her legs gave out. She held the hood for support as she moved to the side reluctantly. “Mr. Fullbuster, you’re mistaken. My mom really did entrust Anne to an old couple. She didn’t know they would abandon her. She’s repentant.
“I also had nothing to do with the thugs that hurt Anne four years ago! The police had it investigated. If I were behind it, I wouldn’t be standing here, would I?” Selina would never admit the truth in front of Jonathan.
“Nothing to do with you? The Whites might have had your back back then. But do you they’ll still do the same now?”
