Mother didn’t want to deal with him anymore and turned to leave. Lewis quickly grabbed her hand and pressed, “Didn’t Elma already agree to be with me? How could she marry Nick?”
Hearing this, Mother flew into a rage, yanking her hand free and snapping, “Agree to what? My perfectly good daughter could be a CEO’s wife, but instead you want her as your mistress? You’ve got some nerve!”
Only then did Lewis remember that making Elma his mistress was something he and Father had discussed privately. He’d assumed that since Elma loved him so much, she’d be willing and grateful to be his mistress.
The thought of her marrying Nick left Lewis feeling hollow inside, and he couldn’t help but chase after the wedding
procession.
Janice grabbed Lewis’s arm: “Lewis, where are you going?”
Lewis felt agitated: “I’m going to find Elma. I can’t let her
Nick.”

Janice looked at him with tears in her eyes: “Why? Did you fall for Elma while I was unconscious?”
Faced with Janice’s questioning, Lewis instinctively deflected: “No, it’s just… Nick can’t have children, and he’s already caused

the deaths of three wives. I’m worried Elma will be in danger if she marries him.”
Janice held tight to Lewis’s arm and said gently, “Dad already
looked into all that. It’s just rumors, otherwise he never would have let Elma marry into that family.”
“But…”
Janice cut him off: “Lewis, Elma is my sister, and now that she’s married, we should start planning our own wedding.”
Janice dragged Lewis off to discuss wedding dates with her father.
I sat in the wedding car, listening to the sounds of the procession outside, feeling somewhat anxious.
Nick had been sickly since childhood and had lived abroad most of his life, so few people had actually seen him. Some rumors claimed he looked fierce and menacing, like a death–seeking demon. Others said that because he couldn’t have children, his temperament was unpredictable and he enjoyed tormenting people–his first three wives had all been tortured to death by him.
After thinking it over, I decided to stay calm and take things as they came. At worst, I’d die, and since I’d already died once, there was nothing left to fear.

The car drove for a long time before finally stopping.

A pair of well–defined hands opened the car door and extended a red silk ribbon toward me. I grasped the ribbon and let him help me out of the car.
Today’s ceremony was a traditional wedding. Whether from sitting too long or being too nervous, I stumbled over the threshold and nearly fell.
His hand caught my waist just in time: “Careful.”
His voice was warm and pleasant, extraordinarily beautiful, yet somehow familiar.
After all the ceremonies ended, I sat on the bed. Having not eaten all day, my stomach was growling loudly. Listening to the commotion outside, I had no idea when Nick would come.
What if he came in angry? Wouldn’t I end up dying of
starvation?
With that thought, I lifted a corner of my veil and grabbed a pastry from the table.
It melted in my mouth, sweet but not cloying. As expected from the capital’s Samson family—even their pastries were better than street vendor food.
After finishing one piece, I couldn’t resist taking another.

Just then, the door creaked open. I looked up to see Nick in his wedding attire standing in the doorway, staring at me with complete astonishment.
