Chapter 5
My eyes widened in surprise. I didn’t think someone would actually recognize the name I’d mentioned offhandedly.
My dad, Niall Chalder, had always kept his job a mystery until he was seriously injured ten years ago.
After being hospitalized for more than half a year, he retired from the front lines. It was only then that I gradually started becoming closer to him.
It was also when people wearing different military uniforms visited him every day during his hospitalization that I vaguely
realized Dad seemed to hold quite a prestigious position.
I remembered that before I’d packed my bags and left, my mom–Esme Nightingale–had told me to mention Dad’s name if I
ever encountered any difficulties on the road.
I’d joked that she was being a worrywart back then.
After all, I was just going to see James to spend the new year holidays together, so how could I possibly run into any problems?
Since my childhood, Dad had barely spent any time at home.
Whenever I asked Mom where he was, she’d always tell me proudly that he was an amazing commander.
All I knew of Dad was an unfamiliar, intimidating figure that would occasionally show up at home, as well as the photo of him and
his military comrade on the photo wall.
When I was a child, Mom would always point to the people in the photos and introduce them to me.
I raised my head with great effort and looked toward the intimidating Colonel Lewell. It was only upon closer inspection that I
realized he looked rather similar to the person in the photo Dad had left at home.
Seeing that Colonel Lewell recognized me, Regina was now looking at me with a hint of fear in her eyes.
She asked shakily, “Niall? How could she possibly be someone you know, Colonel Lewell? There’s no way a woman like her, who conducts herself improperly and engages in immoral behavior could be the descendant of a commander here.”
She was raving, her gaze darting around shiftily as sweat beaded on her forehead.
Expectedly, Colonel Lewell’s friendliness was nowhere to be seen. “I usually overlook many of your actions for James‘ sake, Regina. However, you beat up a woman and a child in broad daylight today, which has seriously damaged our base’s reputation!
“I’ll be vetoing James‘ military transfer order on hold for now.”
Regina panicked the moment she heard that James‘ transfer order was going to be vetoed. “H–How could you do that, Colonel Lewell? James‘ transfer order was agreed upon more than half a year agol How could you veto it over some trivial matter?”
She was furious. She leveled an increasingly hateful glare at me and snapped, “It’s all because of you that James won’t be getting his promotion, you bitch! I’m going to beat you to death!”

“Enough! If you continue to make a scene, I’ll suspend James from his duties and have him reflect on himself at home! If a captain like him can’t even deal with his family members properly, he can forget about ever receiving another promotion!”
Colonel Lewell’s reprimand finally got Regina to calm down a little.
He then turned around and, after softening his expression and gentling his tone, asked me quietly, “Now, young lady, can you tell
me who you are to Niall?”
His face was filled with anticipation, and it was then that I could finally be sure that he was Dad’s good friend from the photo,
Adrian Lewell.
“I’m Niall Chalder’s daughter, Celine Chalder, Colonel Lewell.”
As soon as the words left my mouth, I passed out from exhaustion.
