It felt like a lightning strike splitting me in half. My voice trembled as I cried out, “That’s impossible! I’ve known William Ford for ten years. We’ve been married for five. How could our marriage certificate be fake?”
I crouched to retrieve the booklet that had been tossed to the ground, desperate to have it verified again.
But before I could reach it, Olivia Scott ground her stiletto heel into my wrist. She smirked down at me, her voice dripping with
triumph.
“See? My certificate is the real one. You shameless bitch, sleeping with my husband, pretending to be me. Today I’ll teach you what it means to know your place.”
Her heel pressed harder. Pain shot through her, nearly knocking her out. Behind her, her lackeys swung iron rods across my back. Agony shot through me, forcing me to bend double.
“Stop!” I barked through gritted teeth.
“You don’t even know the truth yet, what right do you have to beat me? I’m a director at Sterling Corporation. Every single one of you who assaults me will face a lawsuit. You’ll pay for this in court!”
For a split second, silence fell. Then laughter burst around me like fireworks.
“Just now she claimed to be William’s wife. Now she’s pretending to be a corporate director? What a compulsive liar.”
“Sterling is the top company in Oakridge. You think some random nobody can just waltz in as a director?”
Olivia arched her brows, playing queen as she gave the mob their cue.
“Sterling belongs to my husband. I’ve never heard of you being on the board. Don’t worry, everyone, your boss’s wife is right here. Whoever teaches this mistress a lesson, I’ll have William reward you with a position.”
The atmosphere flipped in an instant. Faces lit up with greedy excitement as they surged closer.
“Sterling only hires Ivy League grads and overseas talent, people who make millions a year!”
“She’s just a mistress anyway. I hate women like her. Let’s do it.”
Hands yanked my hair, nails dug cruelly into my skin. I screamed, convinced that the next moment the mob would trample me
underfoot.
A sharp whistle cut through the chaos. Airport security stormed over, barking orders as they shoved people back.
“What are you all doing? Disperse, now! Sterling Corporation’s VIP passenger is arriving today. Clear the way!”
The crowd scattered reluctantly. A few guards pulled me upright, shielding me.
Olivia stood aside with her arms crossed, tapping her foot impatiently against the floor, her eyes full of disdain.
“You dare chase me away? Do you even know who I am?”
The lead officer approached with careful deference.
“Madam, we’ve been informed that Sterling Corporation’s VIP is flying with Atlantic Air today. We’ve been ordered to tighten security and avoid crowd congestion.”
Olivia gave a mocking laugh, twirling the iron rod like it was a scepter. She jabbed the officer’s chest with it.
“Sterling Corporation? You’re talking about me, aren’t you? I am William Ford’s wife.”
She flipped open her marriage certificate and shoved it in his face.
“Open your dog eyes and look carefully. I’m the one you’re supposed to be protecting. Atlantic Air is practically under Sterling’s wing And you, some mutt who can’t even recognize his master, should be grateful if I don’t fire you on the spot.”
