Chapter7
Only then did the crowd awaken to the truth.
“So Miss Carter was the real wife all along, and Olivia Scott is the actual mistress!”
“She misled us on purpose, framing Emily as the other woman. She knew exactly what she was doing!”
Their guilt toward me swiftly turned into outrage toward Olivia.
“You filthy liar! You knew he was married and still clung to him, and you tricked us into thinking Emily was the mistress.”
“Whore! You broke up someone else’s family and tried to flip the story upside down.”
One of the women who had rushed over earlier, after seeing Olivia’s livestream, now stepped out of the crowd. She had lived nearby and wanted to confront the supposed mistress who had “stolen another woman’s husband.”
When she learned the truth, her fury exploded.
“My husband’s mistress lied just like you did. Women like you, wrecking families and bullying the rightful wife, deserve to die!”
The mob turned on Olivia with renewed hatred, surrounding her until she was dragged out nearly unconscious, her ribs fractured from
the blows.
And still William Ford had the audacity to argue with Richard Coleman.
“On what grounds are you firing me? Do you know how much I’ve accomplished in the past five years? Sterling is the top company in Oakridge now, all because of me!”
Richard’s laugh was dry and sharp. He fixed William with a stare that stripped him bare.
“Accomplishments? The only reason you had any success is because Emily Carter fed you those contracts behind the scenes. And after everything you’ve done, I should be ending your career here and now. Consider yourself lucky I’m restraining myself for the sake of
Sterling’s reputation.”
The weight of his authority crushed William into silence.
But when Richard revealed that I had been the one quietly supporting him all along, William faltered completely, unable to process it.
In the end, everyone involved in this disgrace was dragged off under Richard’s command.
I was wrapped in layers of bandages before being sent home.
But home felt emptier than ever.
The Carter Family Mansion, once blazing with lights whenever I returned, stood silent and dark. Grandpa no longer waited for me with his warm smile, he now lay cold and still.
My throat tightened until it was hard to breathe.
“I’m sorry, Grandpa.”
“It was my blindness, my poor judgment, that brought you to this.”
“Will
Olivia Scott, you will both pay the price.”
For the next several days, I buried myself in arranging Grandpa’s funeral.
Meanwhile, William tried to call me over and over. When I didn’t answer, he sent text messages instead.
(Emily, just sign the statement of forgiveness and I’ll be released. We’re still married, aren’t we?]
(The doctor said your injuries weren’t serious, just a few bruises. Nothing worth making a fuss over].

Grandpa had died because of his mistress. And he still expected my forgiveness?
I ignored every message.
The next day, his lawyer showed up at my door.
He carried himself with arrogance, his tone every bit as condescending as William’s.
“Miss Carter, I’m here on behalf of my client to request reconciliation. This is nothing more than a domestic dispute between husband and wife. Even if it goes to court, the punishment won’t be severe. Considering your marital ties, I suggest you be reasonable and sign
the statement immediately.”
My eyes went cold. Of course William would hire someone just like him, arrogant, smug, and blind.
“And if I refuse?” I asked icily.
The lawyer’s gaze hardened. He looked at me with chilling indifference and said…
