Chapter8
The lawyer’s volce dripped with arrogance.
“Even if this goes to court, given your marital ties, the worst William might face is a few days of detention. He’s willing to settle if you sign now, two hundred thousand in compensation. Be smart about it. After all, your injuries didn’t even cost that much to treat,”
I couldn’t help but laugh, genuinely amused by his stupidity.
“You really don’t know, do you? Someone of my background would never marry without a prenuptial agreement. William signed a waiver before we wed, voluntarily giving up any claim to marital assets and agreeing to terms in the event of divorce.”
“Otherwise, why do you think he’s dangling two hundred thousand like it’s some golden prize? He has nothing else to bargain with.”
I leaned forward, my eyes cold and unyielding.
“I’ve already filed for divorce. We’re no longer bound by law. And I swear I’ll see him rot behind bars, as the only justice left for my grandfather.”
For the first time, the lawyer’s confidence cracked, panic flickering in his eyes. Yet he forced a smirk and tried to sneer his way through
“Women like you take everything too seriously. Men like us extend an olive branch, and you can’t even accept it? No wonder he strayed. You’re too domineering, what man could stand that?”
His words grew filthier with every breath, his chauvinism reeking in the room.
“And besides, how does a woman like you get so rich? Who knows if your money came from anything decent?”
He thought belittling me would win. He couldn’t have been more wrong.
I fixed him with a flat stare and snapped my fingers. A bodyguard appeared instantly at my side.
“So many lawyers have already refused William’s case, but you jumped at it. Desperate, aren’t you?”
I let my gaze travel over his crumpled suit.
“Judging from that collar, you haven’t done laundry in weeks. What is it, divorced, most of your assets gone to your wife? Is that why you vent your bitterness on women like me?“”
My voice hardened.
“Beat him. Toss him out. I’ll cover the medical bills.”
William’s attempt at reconciliation had failed, but he wasn’t finished. He turned around and dragged me into court.
“Emily Carter failed to fulfill the duties of a wife!” he declared before the judge, his voice booming with false righteousness.
“Five
years of marriage, no children, no domestic support. Instead, she gallivants abroad, who knows with whom? Maybe she’s been unfaithful all along. I only gave her a taste of her own medicine!”
Sitting at the defense table, I regarded him with ice in my veins.
“Facts are faces. If you can’t win with truth, you resort to conspiracy theories? Where’s your evidence?”
Smuply he pulled out a few photographs.
went abroad to surprise you on our first anniversary. Instead, I found you chatting intimately with another man. Dare you say you didn’t sleep with him?”
I glanced at the photos and realization struck. That was the day everything had shifted. From then on, he had grown distant, colder
And that was the opening Olivia had exploited.
But I had explained it to him back then, clearly. The man in the photos was a business partner. Our conversation had been strictly professional.

The judge studied the photos. “Is there any other evidence?”
William faltered, his temper fraying.
“What do you mean, other evidence? Isn’t this enough? Are you all on her payroll?” He jabbed a finger at me, his voice breaking into a shrill rage.
“Emily, you can’t twist the truth just because you have money!”
The courtroom fell into awkward silence. His tantrum only exposed how little he had.
And in the end, the verdict was inevitable: William Ford lost.
I, however, wasn’t finished. I submitted a stack of documents to the court, each one damning.
“Even if you hadn’t accused me, William, I was already prepared to bring charges. During your tenure at Sterling, you committed tax evasion, embezzlement, and countless corrupt dealings. Every piece of evidence has already been filed with the court.”
I met his eyes with icy contempt.
“Did you really think I knew nothing?”
