Ashton thought, I’m determined to make a move. No matter how much chaos it causes, I can handle the fallout for my wife, so there is no need for my father to intervene just yet.
A trump card is most intimidating when saved for last.
For now, I will let those buffoons enjoy their moment for a few more days!
Ashton’s eyes were icy cold.
Ashton already loathed those people before he knew his mother was also a victim of lab experiments. His heart ached for Briar, who had spent the last eighteen years living in hatred. His love for her meant he also shared her mother’s hatred for the tragic ordeal she had endured.
And, he had another reason to hate.
Much of the worry in Gideon’s eyes faded away when he saw how concerned Ashton was for Briar.
He had exhausted all means to send Ashton away back then. All he ever wanted was for Ashton to have what he had now: a smooth life, a successful career, and a happy family.
As for those who had once harmed his wife and now sought to harm his son and daughter–in–law…
He would oblige them if they had dead wishes.
Gideon had meticulously schemed his way into the position, not just for power, but to crush those people so they could never recover.
There were also those secret labs. Although they no longer dared to experiment on ordinary people in recent years, and most of those caught later were death row inmates secretly taken from prisons, it was still unforgivable.
No one forgave evil, even when the perpetrators wanted to repent.
He took the position to send those who wished to repent to hell to confess to the devil.
He wasn’t sure if it was his mind playing tricks or if his eyes were deceiving him, but Gideon thought he saw the corners of Chauntae’s lips curve into… a smile?
Overjoyed, Gideon crouched by the bedside, taking Chauntae’s withered and wrinkled hand. “Honey, Chauntae, can you hear us? Honey?“Chauntae McInnes
Drawn by Gideon’s voice, Briar and Ashton turned to look at Chauntae.
However, they watched for a while and saw no further reaction from Chauntae.
“Briar, my mother… ” Upon seeing how excited Gideon was, Ashton couldn’t bear it. He hesitated, wanting to ask about his mom but not knowing how to begin.

Briar finished a glass of water and shook her head, speaking lightly, “Her physical condition isn’t poor. A miracle is unlikely. Even if she wakes up, she might be in a vegetative state.”
A person in a vegetative state was half–dead, without thoughts or a soul.
With tireless care from their family, such a person might have a chance to make a full recovery.
However, miracles like that were rare worldwide.
Ashton said nothing and nodded.
The three of them spent most of the day at the nursing home before reluctantly leaving by car.
When they left, Ashton and Briar were in one car, and Gideon left separately in his Rolls–Royce.
A group of security guards, harshly “lectured” by their chief, stood in the guardhouse, staring at the Rolls- Royce as it disappeared into the distance.
“Boss, do you think the person in that car is that important figure?”
They found it all so unbelievable.
‘Who would such an important figure come to visit at our private nursing home?‘ they thought.
“Stop looking. They’re gone.” The head of security, worried his men couldn’t keep their mouths shut, added a warning, “Don’t be curious. Remember what I told you. Seeing everything and saying everything will only get you into trouble.”
All the surveillance cameras in the nursing home were turned off, and all medical staff were told not to move around. It was clearly a top–secret matter, not something for low–level guards like them to pry into.
“Don’t worry, boss. No matter how curious we are, we know better than to spread rumors about this.”
They weren’t naive security guards. They knew that if word got out about the important figure visiting the sanatorium today, they, the ones guarding the gate, would be the first to be suspected.
With such high pay and good benefits, who in their right mind would risk their life and job over this?
The head of security nodded, satisfied. “It’s good that you all think that way. We’re just ordinary people and shouldn’t get involved in complicated matters. Otherwise, our families will be the ones to suffer.”
The other guards all agreed.
They could be reckless themselves, but they wouldn’t dare take a risk that could endanger their families.
After leaving the nursing home, Ashton and his group soon arrived at a five–star hotel, where a security guard enthusiastically guided them to a discreet parking spot.
The security guard waited for the car to park. After Ashton and Briar got out, he lowered his voice and said, “Mr. Wade, Thiago asked us to reserve this spot for you. Please use the employee exit when you leave. Our team will promptly delete the surveillance footage.”

Brandon and lan exchanged a look. They thought, ‘How sad that Ashton has to go through so much trouble with a meal with his father‘
When they reached the top floor, they found not the hotel’s security and service staff waiting at the elevator doors, but the bodyguards in black they had seen at the nursing home.
“Mr. Wade, Mrs. Wade, this way, please.”
One of the bodyguards led the four of them to the only private room on the floor.
Gideon was already sitting inside, accompanied by Griffin and Thiago.
“Ashton, Briar, you are here,” Thiago greeted them with a smile. “Don’t just stand there. Come on in.”
Brandon and Ian knew better than to follow them inside. Once Ashton and Briar entered the private room, they closed the door and went to the adjacent room.
The people in the room were all major figures.
It was clear they were about to discuss something important. It was better not to know the details.
Brandon looked at Ian, saying, “Why didn’t you follow them in? Aren’t you curious about the power behind Ashton?”
Ian rolled his eyes at Brandon. “I’m simple, not stupid.”
‘Brandon is awful. How could he encourage me to go on a suicide mission?‘ thought Ian.
He was curious about how powerful Ashton was, but he would never go on a suicide mission.
He cherished his life. He still had to look after his young sister. If he died, what would she do?
Brandon chuckled, ignored Ian, and started a video call with Xavion.
“Hey, honey, do you know where I am right now?” Brandon spun around in the private room, starting to show off to Xavion with a chuckle.
Xavion must have been free and made small talk with Brandon for over half an hour.
Ian was so envious. It was great to have a significant other!
Even if one’s significant other is in a different country, one can still ease loneliness through one’s phone.
Just as Ian was feeling bitter with envy, his phone rang. He took it out, and his expression changed when he saw who was calling.
“Hello, Kameron…”
