Chapter 9
Melody answered in a dry, hoarse voice, “It’s nothing, I just twisted it.”
Landon took her to the infirmary for some ointment, then walked her back to her dorm before they parted ways.
But Skylar’s sudden appearance that day planted a seed of unease in Melody, who had been living in a blissful bubble of love.
Especially since she couldn’t stop thinking about what Skylar had said, and the pity in her eyes when she looked at her.
“Melody, you should break up with Landon, quickly. If it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t have dragged you into our drama.”
What kind of drama did they have?
She thought it over and over but couldn’t make sense of it. Connecting it with Landon’s attitude toward Skylar, the feeling of unease grew stronger.
Sometimes, she even felt that Landon was miles away from her, that she couldn’t see through him at all.
After agonizing over it for a few days, Melody finally couldn’t take it anymore. She took the opportunity while bringing him food to tentatively broach the subject.
Landon, there’s something I want to ask you.”
Landon, with a book in his hand, gave a faint “Mm.”
Melody continued, “About Skylar, what is the relationship between you and her?”
Almost instantly, Landon’s expression turned icy.
His cool gaze fell upon her as he spoke coldly, “It’s none of your business.”
A small pang shot through Melody’s heart. “I just want to understand you better.”
He seemed to have completely lost his patience. “I think I’ve told you before, I don’t report anything to you. That includes my past.”
andon got up and left, and the meal Melody had specially brought for him remained unopened.
Melody stood frozen, her heart aching more and more. Why did he suddenly get so angry?
Vas it just because she brought up Skylar?
o it really wasn’t her imagination.
Landon, the person who was always so nonchalant about everything, would actually show so much emotion over a girl.
or the first time since they started dating, the two of them entered a cold war.
or rather, it was a one-sided cold war on Landon’s part.
rom that day on, he completely ignored her.
he returned to her dorm in low spirits. The more she thought about it, the more something felt wrong, so she had no choice but to ask Elodie. “Elodie, do you
now what happened between Landon and Skylar Ford?”
lodie didn’t know why she was bringing up Skylar, but her expression shifted the moment she heard the name. “I’m not too sure. Skylar and we all grew up ogether, and Landon was always pretty good to her. But after my uncle passed away, the Ford family moved, and Skylar left.”
The family is very hush-hush about my uncle’s death, so I don’t know the specifics.”
Melody had a vague feeling that these events must be connected somehow.
But she couldn’t find a single clue to unravel the mystery, until a few days later, when Seth appeared before her.
Can we talk? It’s about Landon.”
Melody hesitated for a moment, but eventually nodded.
They sat down together at an off campus coffee shop. Melody noticed he looked exhausted, and remembering how weak Skylar had looked, she asked with rancern. Is Skylar doing okay?”
“She’s had a heart condition since she was a kid. That was an episode the other day. She’s getting ready to be discharged in a few days.”
Melody was silent for a moment. “You like her?”
“I do.” Seth’s eyes dimmed for a second. “But she doesn’t like me back, because there’s still someone in her heart she can never forget.”
Melody’s heart suddenly clenched. Just as she was about to speak, she looked up and saw him staring at her with an inscrutable expression, his eyes holding the same pity she had seen from Skylar.
“You’ve probably guessed who that person is. Actually, Skylar asked me to come find you. She’s a kind girl, and she doesn’t want you to be deceived any longer.”
