Chapter 17

He pulled it out excitedly, but unfortunately, the caller ID wasn’t the name he was hoping for.

Landon’s eyes, which had lit up, dimmed when he saw the name “Lucas” on the screen.

He answered the call. “Hello, what’s up?”

On the other end, Lucas heard the obvious off-tone in Landon’s voice and felt it was a bit strange.

“Hey, Landon. What do you mean, ‘what’s up’? I was about to ask you what happened. Weren’t we supposed to meet at The Velvet Lounge at six? It’s after six now, how come the birthday boy hasn’t shown up?”

Landon paused. Only then did he remember that he was supposed to be at the birthday party Lucas and the others had planned for him.

He rubbed his temples in frustration. He had originally planned to cancel, but thinking he couldn’t let his friends down, he relented.

Got it. I’m on my way. Give me fifteen minutes.”

Landon hailed a cab on the street outside the campus gate. After confirming the destination with the driver, he leaned back wearily in his seat and closed his

eyes.

He had grown used to being alone, used to being careless. Over the years, he had never had real feelings for any girl and had never believed in love.

So before Melody, he was indeed quite casual about relationships and women.

f he liked how they looked, he’d accept their confession. When he got bored, he’d break up with them.

But none of this was because Landon was truly a heartless player. It was just that even though those girls all claimed to like him, he never felt any genuine

ffection from them.

Perhaps they never liked him. They only liked the person with the handsome face, the one labeled as an excellent student. They would like anyone like that, -ven if that person wasn’t Landon Crow.

Countless people surrounded him, but those who made him feel genuine affection were pitifully few.

But, over this past month, he had truly felt Melody’s affection for him, maybe even her love.

Her feelings for him had nothing to do with his looks or his status. She liked him for who he was, completely and utterly.

Landon only then belatedly realized that perhaps the reason he hadn’t broken up with Melody wasn’t because he wanted to drive Skylar away, but simply

ecause he really, really liked her.

n his not-so-long relationship with Melody, he had gotten serious a long time ago.

andon admitted that, in the beginning, he had intended to use Melody to get rid of Skylar, because he thought she was no different from all the vain girls efore her.

-ut he also had to admit that he had long been moved by Melody’s sincerity.

Whether it was running through the rain to bring him stomach medicine, making him lunch day after day, or even staying up all night just to replicate the black weater his mother never got to finish for him.

Thinking of this, Landon couldn’t help but hug the gift box containing the black sweater tighter.

Co one had ever been as good to him as Melody, just as no one had ever truly walked into his heart like she had.
