Hearing Lucas’s question, Landon couldn’t help but rub his temples.
“Melody, she went to study abroad.”
Hearing Melody’s name from Landon’s lips again, Lucas’s mind conjured up the image of her from the last time he saw her.

Dack?”
When did I dump her? It was clearly her who dumped me!” Landon retorted irritably.
Lucas’s mouth fell open in surprise. Someone else chimed in, “But the fight you had with Melody in front of the library that day was all over campus. Everyone vas saying you dumped her. Someone even posted a video of it on the school forum.”
andon frowned. Only then did he remember that Melody had indeed asked him that day if he wouldn’t try to stop her if she broke up with him.
At that time, Landon was still angry about Skylar’s sudden appearance, so he had casually said, “whatever.”

The cake was his favorite shade of blue, and on top was a drawing of a little boy wearing a barrister’s wig and holding a gavel. Landon couldn’t help but stare, tunned.
-eeing Landon staring at the cake, Lucas said, “Elodie had this delivered. She didn’t say it outright, but I’m guessing this is what Melody had prepared for you.”
Alright, alright, enough of that. Make a wish! Blow out the candles!”
With that, Lucas started leading the birthday song. “Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…”
Candon stared at the flickering candlelight in the darkness, his eyes welling up.
He never believed in gods or ghosts, and he scorned making wishes to the heavens, because he didn’t believe in fate, only in himself.
But this time, Landon closed his eyes, clasped his hands together, and let the tears fall as he devoutly made the only birthday wish he had made in all these
years.
