Chapter 30
“At first, I also thought he was just playing around when he said he liked you. But then he really changed his ways, no more ambiguous relationships with other girls. That’s when I truly believed him.”
“Especially that one night when I went to his place, I saw him sitting among a pile of empty beer bottles, clutching the black sweater you knitted for him, crying all by himself. That’s when I knew he was hopelessly in love with you.”
“Mel, you know this too. Even though Landon is always surrounded by people, he’s actually lonelier than anyone. But it’s often people like him that, once they fall in love for real, become more devoted than anyone else,”
“I have to apologize. Over the past two years, under Landon’s threats and bribes, I did secretly give him some updates about you. But don’t worry, I didn’t say anything I shouldn’t have. I just felt sorry for him and wanted to help,”
“Mel, if you still like Landon, just give him another chance.”
“You are so, so amazing. You were never not good enough’ for him like you used to worry. In fact, I think it’s Landon who’s not good enough for you.”
After a long, rambling speech, Elodie finally slumped onto the table, completely passed out.
Melody found her amusing, paid the bill, helped her up, and hailed a cab,
Watching the city’s vibrant nightlife blur past the window, Melody couldn’t help but replay Elodie’s words in her mind.
They say that in wine, there is truth. Melody didn’t doubt the authenticity of Elodie’s long drunken confession, she just needed some time to process the sheer
amount of information.
After two years, to finally hear an echo of her five-year-long secret crush, it would be a lie to say her heart wasn’t moved.
The person you fall in love with when you’re young always seems to have a kind of magic, the moment they appear, they can effortlessly shake your resolve.
Now, two years later, Melody could still remember herself from back then, loving Landon so recklessly, with all her heart.
The reasons they reached a crossroads back then were twofold: Landon’s indifferent attitude, and Skylar.
But now, after Elodie’s explanation, Melody understood that the two things that had stood between them didn’t actually exist.
If they had just communicated more, perhaps they wouldn’t have reached the point of breaking up.
Back then, faced with Landon’s messy and complicated love life, Melody was on the verge of a breakdown. She was so, so tired, which is why she chose to run.
But even so, she didn’t regret her decision.
Her two years studying abroad taught her a lot, and she managed to save up a considerable amount of money through side gigs and part-time jobs.
She had already decided to join one of the companies in the city that had extended her an offer. The position and salary were both too good to refuse.
Now, standing at the crossroads of entering the professional world, all she wanted was to do her job well.
As for Landon, she didn’t want to think about him. More accurately, she didn’t dare to.
