As for Perseus, he’d claimed to be too busy at the company and never showed up at all.
Now, before her eyes, Sylvia suddenly yanked her hand from Melanie’s grasp and stepped back. “I… I already have parents. They’ve loved me all my life and never once let me suffer.
“I think… we were just never meant to be. You should pretend you never found me. After all, it wasn’t even you who did. I’m living well as I am, and I don’t want to change that. Let’s just stay out of each other’s lives.”
She blurted it all out in one breath, then turned and ran. Anneliese immediately followed, snatching the property transfer contract from Christopher’s hand as she passed.
But before she could leave, Perseus grabbed her arm. “Anneliese! Our family wronged you, sure–but you were never one of us. We raised you for years, and now we’ve lost everything because of it. Doesn’t that make us even?”
Christopher’s eyes burned red. “And now you’re turning our real sister against us. How can you be so cruel?”
Anneliese almost laughed at the absurdity. She jerked her arm free, her voice cutting cold. “I told her the truth–that’s cruelty? What, you want me to lie like Selina did, twisting black into white and deceiving everyone? Would that make me ‘kind‘ in your eyes?”
Her conscience was clear. She hadn’t exaggerated or slandered anyone, only facts. That, in her mind, was already mercy enough.
“Anne, we’ve already realized our mistakes. Please, let me reunite with my daughter. I only have one daughter–please…” Melanie sobbed, suddenly stepping forward, and her knees buckled as if she were about to kneel before Anneliese.
“Mom!”
“Get up, Mom!”
Perseus and Christopher hurried to pull her back, and Anneliese simply stood there, unmoving, watching with icy detachment. She didn’t believe for a second that Melanie would truly kneel.
Sure enough, the moment her sons tugged at her, Melanie bounced right back up as though spring–loaded. She looked up, meeting Anneliese’s cool, almost mocking smile.
Anneliese’s tone was calm but sharp as glass. “The daughter you cherished all those years was

Selina–and only Selina. Now you’re running around desperate to claim another. Why didn’t you think of that sooner?
“Whether your real daughter acknowledges you or not is her choice. I’ve done my part. If she refuses, you’ve only yourselves to blame. You made this mess–you’ll have to live with it.”
With that. Anneliese turned and walked away. Melanie stood frozen, eyes bloodshot, whispering hollowly. “Our daughter won’t acknowledge us it’s our own doing, our own fault
Then, overwhelmed by regret, she tore free from her sons and rushed after Anneliese. “Please -tell me how to reach her!”
At the restaurant’s doorway, Melanie collided into her from behind. Anneliese stumbled forward, teetering toward a display of porcelain vases. If she fell, she would crash straight into the shards below.
She gasped, instinctively raising an arm to shield her face, but a strong hand caught her in time, steadying her before she could fall. Heart still pounding. Anneliese turned quickly. Thank you—thank you so much…..”
Her voice faltered as she recognized the man. He was handsome, composed, with a scholarly air that radiated grace. The gold–rimmed glasses on his nose added to the dignified aura.
He gave her a polite nod, expression mild, then turned and walked away with the aide beside him.
Anneliese watched his retreating figure before realization struck—it was Steven Malone.
She had seen him countless times in news clips and once even left fangirl comments under official videos–things like ‘All the most handsome ones end up serving the country. No wonder she hadn’t recognized him right away in person.
“Anne… I’m so sorry, I didn’t mean to,” Melanie’s trembling voice broke through her thoughts.
Anneliese shot her a cold look. “If you want to know, find out on your own. I owe you nothing.”
At that, she walked out without looking back, leaving Melanie standing there, tears streaming down her face, her chest aching with remorse.
Because deep down, Melanie knew Anneliese was right. Their real daughter’s rejection was no one’s fault but their own. After seeing how they had treated Anneliese, how blindly they had favored Selina, what child in her right mind would want to return to such a family?

Outside, Steven had already walked far down the street–but he couldn’t resist glancing back once more toward the restaurant door.
