Chapter 8 A Wife Spending Her Husband’s Money Is Only Right

Becky stayed seated, lazily leaning back on the couch.

“I bought them,” she said aloud.

Yvonne screeched, “Becky! Why did you buy so much stuff? Why are you wasting my brother’s money?”

Becky rolled her eyes. “I’m spending my husband’s money. What’s it to you?”

“That’s my brother’s money!”

“And your brother is my husband! A wife spending her husband’s money is only right!”

Yvonne threw her purse down and planted her hands on her hips, looking like she was ready to brawl.

“Becky, you’re shameless! You clung to my brother and forced him to marry you. You’re nothing but a parasite. You lived off our family growing up, and now you’re draining my brother dry. Becky, you disgusting leech, why don’t you just die? What’s the point of you even being alive?”

Becky stood

Hard.

up and walked right over. She stopped in front of Yvonne-and slapped her across the face.

Five clear fingerprints appeared on Yvonne’s left cheek.

The original Becky and Yvonne had always been at odds.

Yvonne saw her as a thorn in her side, someone who stole her brother’s attention and the love that used to belong to her alone.

As kids, she constantly bullied Becky.

She tricked her into going out and then abandoned her; put bugs in her bed so she’d sleep on the floor; tore up her homework so the teachers would punish her; soaked her winter coat and pants so she had to go to school in thin clothes and ended up with a 104-degree fever; even ganged up with other girls to beat her up.

Yvonne was downright vicious.

Compared to her, Xavier was a saint.

Eventually, Becky started fighting back. When Yvonne picked on her, she returned the favor twice as hard. After a few rounds of that, Yvonne avoided her altogether.

But whenever she got the chance, Yvonne still tried to humiliate her.

Now slapped, Yvonne lunged to hit back, but Becky grabbed her wrist and locked it down.

Becky had learned some basic self-defense. Just enough to handle Yvonne.

Yvonne was stunned. “Let go of me!”

Becky flung her to the floor, looking down at her from above.

“Yvonne, let’s get this straight. The reason the Bolton family raised me is because your mother’s life was saved by my grandmother. In return, she agreed to raise me and send me to college.”

Her grandmother, Jade Quinn, had been a legendary doctor of medicine. She was highly skilled, but as she aged, she moved back to the countryside to live out her days in peace.

Yvonne’s mother had a serious illness and nearly died. She sought out Jade’s help.

By then, Jade’s health was already failing. She was old, constantly worried about Yvonne’s mom, and her own condition worsened rapidly.

Still, she cured Yvonne’s mother without accepting any money. But before she passed away, she asked Yvonne’s mom to take Becky in, raise her, and pay for her schooling.

Becky had been twelve and remembered everything.

She was grateful to the Bolton family for raising her, but she would never accept Yvonne calling her a parasite.

Yvonne knew all this, of course. She just didn’t care.

Their perfect little family suddenly had an outsider — a

a girl, no less.

She felt like all the affection that once belonged to her was stolen.

Especially her brother’s.

After Becky moved in, her brother wasn’t as doting anymore.

She blamed everything on Becky.

Yvonne got to her feet and shouted, “Your grandma was ridiculous! Just because she cured my mom, she thought she could make shameless demands like that. Becky, do you know how annoying you are? I’m sick of you!”

“Same here,” Becky replied.

“I’m telling my brother and my parents that you hit me! Just wait and see what happens!”

Becky crossed her arms and said coolly, “Go ahead.”

Her tone made Yvonne feel like she was punching cotton.

Yvonne grabbed her purse. “You just wait!”

Then she turned and stormed off.

The maids had been hiding in the kitchen the whole time.

They knew Yvonne always picked fights with Becky whenever she visited.

But today, Becky slapped her outright. It had scared them half to death.

Becky bent down and picked up a few shopping bags. She turned to the kitchen. “Could you help bring the rest upstairs?”

“Oh-of course!” the maids snapped to attention and hurried out to help.

Back in her room, the maids offered to hang her clothes for her.

Becky waved them off.

Once they left, she carefully arranged all her new clothes and accessories in the walk-in closet.

She even took a few photos, satisfied.

Shopping was exhausting. Her back ached, her feet hurt.

She ran a full bath and soaked in the tub.

When she came out, she noticed dozens of missed calls on her phone.

Five from “Hubby.”

Five from “Dad.”

Twenty from “Mom.”

Yvonne had obviously ratted her out. They were all coming to scold her.

Becky switched her phone to silent and got into bed.

A maid knocked on the door. “Ms. Becky, Mr. Xavier is calling.”

Becky shouted through the door, “Not answering!”

“He said if you don’t pick up, he’s taking away everything you bought today.”

Bam the door swung open.

–

Becky grabbed the phone out of the maid’s hand. “What?”.

She sounded pissed.

Xavier clenched his jaw. “Why didn’t

you

answer?”

“I was in the bath,”

Short and snappy. Her tone was anything but patient.

“Why did you hit Yvonne?”

Of course Xavier was calling to interrogate her.

“Because her mouth was filthy. She had it coming.”

Xavier knew his sister didn’t like Becky and always stirred up drama. Every time they saw each other, it turned into a fight.

He didn’t pursue that any further and instead asked, “What did you buy today?”

Becky paused.

Why the sudden change of topic?

Wasn’t he calling to hold her accountable for hitting his sister?

On the other end, Xavier’s tone sharpened. “I asked you a question.”

Becky came back to herself and answered, “I opened my closet this morning and realized I didn’t have anything to wear. As Xavier’s wife, I didn’t even have a decent outfit, a proper bag, or a nice piece of jewelry. It’s embarrassing to go out like that. So I went shopping. And, well… I went a little overboard. Your sister threw a fit over it.”

Her voice was quiet, with a hint of self-pity.

Xavier was silent for a few seconds. “If you like something, just buy it. Don’t worry about the cost.”

Becky stared blankly, even picked up her phone and looked at the screen.

Yep. Still Xavier.

Was he feeling okay?

“You alright?”

Xavier hung up on her with a click.

Becky muttered, “Psycho.”

She handed the phone back to the maid.

Once she was gone, Becky flopped onto the big bed and closed her eyes with a content sigh.

She slept like a baby.

The next morning-

Becky came downstairs in a light, bouncy mood.

She stopped in her tracks when she saw the elegantly dressed woman sitting on the couch.
