Chapter 12 It Must Be an Illusion

Sharon was outraged. “You guys actually signed a prenup? Why didn’t you tell me earlier? That bastard!”

Becky said, “I forgot about it too. But rich families are all like this. It’s normal for them to protect themselves.”

Sharon still felt it was unfair. “He could’ve at least given you an apartment.”

Becky had already made peace with it.

None of that stuff belonged to her in the first place, and she didn’t want to ask Xavier for anything.

“After the divorce, I want to use this money to buy a small apartment. We can’t let anyone find out about this, and I can’t keep the money on me either. You hang on to it for now.”

Sharon nodded firmly.

“Becky, this amount of money isn’t enough to buy a decent place in Dracovia. Can’t you still use Xavier’s card? Let’s buy a few more designer bags and flip them.”

It wasn’t like Becky hadn’t considered that.

But she didn’t want to do it.

Sharon said, “Xavier treated you like crap-why are you hesitating?”

Becky just smiled and stuck her hands in her coat pockets, not wanting to explain more.

She might’ve had thick skin, but she still had her own principles.

“It’s so cold! The weather’s really changing. Let’s go buy some warm clothes for winter.”

Sharon pursed her lips.

Becky could be really stubborn sometimes. No one could talk her out of things.

Just like back then, when she was dead set on Xavier. To marry him, she actually drugged him.

Crazy and obsessive.

Still, if she couldn’t make Xavier bleed a lot, she could at least make him bleed a little.

She hooked arms with Becky. “Let’s go buy a bunch. After you get divorced, you won’t be able to shop like this anymore.”

“Fair enough.”

The two of them hit the mall again for another shopping spree.

Becky bought more than a dozen down jackets—each one a different style.

Just in case she gained weight from the pregnancy, she even got a few in larger sizes.

She bought a bunch for Sharon too, who squealed like a gopher and practically lost her mind with excitement.

Then Becky walked into a maternity store.

Sharon grabbed her. “What are you going in there for?”

Becky said, “To buy stuff.”

Sharon was speechless. “You don’t even have a kid. What are you buying this stuff for?”

Becky paused and lied. “Just stocking up.”

Sharon thought she was nuts.

“You don’t even know when you’re having a kid. What are you stocking up for? You’re ridiculous.”

Sharon figured Becky had gotten addicted to shopping and now wanted to buy everything in sight.

She dragged her out of the store.

Even after they’d walked far away, Becky kept glancing back reluctantly.

Meanwhile, Kevin noticed Xavier’s phone had been ringing nonstop and gave it a puzzled glance.

Xavier showed no reaction and flipped the phone over on the table.

All that shopping, and they’d only spent five or six hundred thousand.

Weak combat power.

That was Xavier’s thought.

The next day, Becky went back to that maternity store by herself.

“Hi, what do I need to prepare for a newborn?”

Two hours later, Becky had spent nearly a million in the maternity store.

She bought everything listed on the shopping assistant’s checklist.

“I’ll leave the stuff with you for now. I’ll come pick it up in a month.”

The assistant had landed a massive sale and treated Becky like royalty.

With a beaming smile, she said, “When the time comes, just give us the address and we’ll deliver it personally.”

Becky replied, “That would be perfect. Thank you.”

Xavier had been away on his business trip for quite a while-two weeks and still not back.

Becky was getting anxious, worried it might delay the divorce paperwork.

During dinner, she cornered one of the housekeepers. “When is Xavier coming back?”

The housekeeper flinched and waved her hands. “We don’t know either. If you miss Mr. Xavier, you should call him.”

Becky turned her head away. “I don’t miss him. Just asking.”

The housekeeper said, “But you’ve already asked us that question more than ten times.”

“Really?”

The housekeepers all nodded in unison.

Becky let out a sigh and lost her appetite.

She stood up. “Clear the table. I’m not eating anymore.”

As they watched her go upstairs, the housekeepers all exchanged knowing smiles.

She was obviously going upstairs to call him.

Becky sat on the bed, hesitated for a moment, then dialed Xavier’s number.

The phone rang for a long time before it was finally picked up.

“What is it?”

She hadn’t heard Xavier’s voice in so long that she froze for a second.

His voice was nice, really, just too cold and sharp.

“Speak.”

He already sounded irritated.

Becky snapped back to her senses and asked, “When are you coming back?”

Xavier didn’t answer.

Afraid of a misunderstanding, she added, “The one-month cooling-off period is almost over.”

Xavier finally spoke. “You called just for that?”

“Yeah.”

Xavier said, “We’ll talk when I’m done here.”

“When will you… be done?”

Before she could finish, Xavier had already hung up.

Becky fell back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling.

Why did it feel like Xavier wasn’t in any hurry to finalize the divorce?

Becky shut her eyes.

It must be an illusion.

It must be an illusion.

The next morning at 7 a.m., Becky was woken up by a phone call.

She was not a morning person. Grabbing her phone, she shouted, “Who the hell is this? Are

“Becky, it’s me. Get over to the Bolton house. Now. Immediately.”

insane?!”

Lilian didn’t sound pleased.

She hung up right after.

Becky had no idea why Lilian was calling her back-she sounded angry and flustered.

Maybe she was mad about how Becky had answered the phone.

After getting ready, Becky went downstairs for breakfast, then took a cab to the Bolton family home.

Henry and Lilian were sitting solemnly on the ornate European-style couch.

Yvonne came downstairs with her arms crossed and scoffed.

‘Becky, what kind of scheme are you trying to pull now?”

Becky had no idea what she was talking about and didn’t plan to respond.

Being ignored made Yvonne furious, and she was just about to lash out when Henry cut in sharply, ‘Enough!”

Yvonne shot Becky a glare and sat beside Lilian.

Becky greeted Henry and Lilian politely, then sat down on a chair a little farther away.

Lilian frowned. “Didn’t I tell you to come earlier? What took you so long?”

Becky answered honestly, “I had to wash up and get dressed. I can’t exactly come see you looking like a mess. That’d be rude.”

Lilian opened her mouth to say more, but Henry interrupted. “Let’s get to the point.”

Lilian finally said, “We heard you and Xavier were talking about divorce recently?”

Becky froze for a second.

“We’re not just talking about it. We’re actually getting divorced.”

There was nothing to hide. They’d find out sooner or later.

Henry and Lilian exchanged a glance. Lilian turned back to Becky. “Who brought it up?”

Becky didn’t answer right away. She was considering the best way to say it.

She knew Henry and Lilian had never been happy that Xavier married her.

If she said she was the one who initiated it, it would definitely make them feel worse.

Most parents could accept their son dumping someone-but couldn’t stomach someone dumping their

son.

In the end, Becky took the middle road. “It was a mutual decision between me and Xavier. We both felt the marriage wasn’t worth continuing.”

Sure enough, Lilian’s expression eased a little.

“If you’ve both thought it through, then we support your decision.”

Henry added, “After the divorce, come back and live with us.”

“Dad!”

Yvonne shouted, clearly unhappy, her face full of resistance.

Lilian didn’t say anything, but it was obvious she wasn’t thrilled either.
